just to know

Can guinea pig eye infections be treated by chloramyceten? The eye infection in question is my new guinea pig, Badger, I got him two days ago but I saw straight away it was infected. He's eating and drinking normally and is a good weight.

Chloromyceten eye drops contain chloramphenicol, which is safe for guineas with eye infections. Is there a concentration (%) mentioned on the packaging anywhere?

Make sure that Badger doesn't have anything stuck in his eye, and check with a vet if no improvement within the next day or if the condition worsens.

looked into it a bit more and his eye is receeding slightly. he also seems to be underweight. will bring him to vets. I'm also going to do something about the per shop he was being kept in. It was a cold day and the person who was running the store had the door open and the rodents were all in small pens at next to the open door.

I woud recommend that you have your piggies seen by vet and properly checked considering their background. If you get given an antibiotic, please ask for a probiotic to bolster the effect on the guts and keep up the appetite.

Also check their sex - just for safety; mistakes do happen only too frequently!
Here is a good website with lots of pictures for sexing:

Make sure that you get your piggies on a good diet of plenty of good quality hay (should make up to 80% of their food intake), plenty of pellets while they are under 6-9 months old, then slowly reduce to max. 1 handful per pig per day.
50g/1 cupful of mixed veg per piggy per day, but introduce new veg slowly in order to avoid tummy upsets.

A good diet is key to a healthy piggy that can enable it to fend off illness and minor problems better!

It is advisable to weigh your piggies once weekly to detect any weight loss (=illness) early. A healthy youngster should put on 30-50g per week for the first few months, after that it will slow down.
