One of my guinea pigs has a nasty eye injury. It's opaque, purple and blue and it also is very blood shot. She went to the vets as soon as it was detected and it has some eye drops with antibiotics in them. Does anyone know how long it takes for eye injuries to heal?

Piggie eyes can be shocking (and frightening) because of the way they respond (quite dramatically) to injury...but can also clear up very quickly with the right meds depending upon the type of injury/infection present.

If possible, can you provide any information as to what the actual injury is to the eye (scratch/damage to the eyeball or just damage to the conjunctiva?) and what medication have you been given and how often do you need to give it.

Also.....Eye injuries can be quite painful and stop/reduce you piggies food intake and sometimes a painkiller can help. Metacam painkiller/anti-inflammatory can help speed up the healing process and keep her eating her "full quota". If she has not been prescribed a painkiller, please weigh her daily to monitor for any weight loss.

Just an update, she went back to the vets and has to have minor surgury or sedation to get rid of the hay as it is now visable.

I'm worried as anesthetics can be risky on guinea pigs. :(
