tried to post amessage but not managedit yet so here i go again
one of my piggies had to have an eye removed due to hay seed getting behind the lid i check and handle my piggies ever day and spend as much time with them as ican (which is quite alot ) they are so funny and all different characters iwas horrified that this should happen but piggy has adjusted well and seems back to normal so please beware any advice about hay would be welcome

Hi Christine, welcome.Hope you will enjoy the board.

Could the hayseed not have been washed out?.

Use top quality meadow hay. This has very little seed in it,but most hay is going to have a bit of seed.

Do not worry because hayseed injury is not too common, and if you notice it straight away you can flush the eye with Optrex or Brolene eye drops,.Just put the drops in the corner of the eye and gently massage across under the lower lid. This should get rid of any foreign body.

Aw poor pig :(
But I'm sure he's coping fine-over time he'll become accustomed to only having one eye
He might be a bit lopsided for a while though :-\

I'm sorry to hear that :( sure you love him/ her just the same :) only think i can suggest is you either change hay, or, theres a small chance it may happen with any.. so id suggest shakin the hay before, and checking it, you cant completely stop it, but you can minimise the risk

i agree x

Sorry to hear that :( why not trying one of those hay bale things? Do you have an indoor or outdoor cage? I used to have lot's of probs with hay getting stuck in their eyes because they were running through it. Now it's off the floor it doesn't happen.

thanks ruth jane will try ahay bale as you suggest piggies are outdoor on nice days with sun shades etc but they go into the shed in their hutches after tea if the weather is bad i open the hutches and they can all run around in the shed when i was putting them to bed tonight iwas sittin g on ahutch holding apiggy jinx an all black one and didnt notice that one of the other piggies had chewed through my shoelace should have called her minx not jinx she is so mischievous and was probably jealous cause it wasnt her turn for a cuddle

Yes have lots of pics but cant work out how to get them from camera to computer and then onto forum ,very frustrating.
