I’ve had my 2 boys for about 10 weeks now, so now that I am getting used to them can someone help me with a few more details……..?

How much food are they supposed to be eating? Do they eat food just because it is there or only when they are hungry?
How much water is a “normal†amount for them to drink?
What is the average weight for a piggy of about 5 months old? I’ve never weighed them before, any suggestions on how to do it?

1 boy is quite tame, and very vocal!
The other boy is completely the opposite, very shy and very quiet. He runs away from being picked up but is ok once I have got hold of him, he won’t come out for food, unlike Tracle who will chew your fingers off if there’s not enough food in your hand! Can I expect him to get tamer as he gets older? Is there anything that I can do?

Hiya,

Welcome to the forum! :) I'm relatively new to guineas too I got my first one in June, I've now got 5! :)

The diet should be 80% of a good quality Hay, Meadow would do but I use Timothy mixed with Meadow. 15% Veggies (I give 3 different veggies in the morning and 3 different ones for dinner and then the same the following day with different veg so we have a sort of rota system set up.) And 5% Dried either pellets or mix. Pellets would stop selective feeding, mine eat all their mix so I've kept them on that.

Mine tend to save food when I give it, say in the morning I give them three different veg then they save one lot for early afternoon. Mine don't guts themselves, they seem quite clever that way. Although I know all pigs are different.

Some pigs don't drink water at all some drink a lot, it depends on the pig. Cuzzy (my Sheltie) doesn't drink really my other two boys like carrot juice that you can get at P@H but don't like water much. There is plenty of water in veggies especially cucumber so don't worry about the intake if they don't drink a lot.

Sunshine my first pig who is an Aby weighs 800g he is now 5 months old exactly, I have dial scales and I put each pig in a deep container that would hold one pig (make sure the dial is at zero when pig isn't on the scales) I then put the scales in a washing basket and then weigh the pig. I've added security with the washing basket and know if one escapes they will still be save. They are good at getting weighed though, they seem to know what I'm doing!

Just keep trying with your skittish pig, my girls don't take food off me yet. Talk to him, keep offering little bits to him and he should come around!

Take care,

Louise
