Poppy came to live with us in 2016 as a companion for Violet who was grieving the loss of her sister Connie. Poppy had been surrendered in a mixed box of piggies, most of whom were babies. She was a young adult. It was thought that she may be the mother of some of the babies or possibly pregnant herself. She saw out her pregnancy watch with me as Violet was grieving and needed a companion, and the 2 got on famously. Poppy was a gentle sow with no hint of dominance about her, an under sow truly happy with her status.

She was often to be found at the food bowl and had a very sweet tooth, always delighting in finding a piece of carrot that may have been hidden at the bottom.

When my foster sow Holly was unceremoniously beaten up and evicted by her cage mate (the unbelievably aggressive Ivy) Poppy and Violet made her welcome and they formed a very happy trio. Here they are in the bonding pen. And then in their c and c. Despite Holly’s youth, Poppy happily accepted her position as the bottom sow in the pecking order and had no issue with it.

Poppy was not a fan of exercise unless it involved a trip to the food bowl. However, she had legendary destruction skills and delighted in showing Holly how to demolish a carrot cottage or 2.

After Violet’s death Poppy and Holly lived happily together as a pair with Holly as the boss and Poppy following in her shadow, until Mabel was evicted by her cage mate Mollie. The girls gladly welcomed Mabel into their group and were a very happy trio with no squabbles. Again Poppy accepted her status as the bottom ranked sow.

When Sylvia was surrendered to the rescue over the Christmas closure 2017/2018 this lovely welcoming trio welcomed Sylvia with her luscious locks. As a quad they were amazing - no squabbles or issues. Sylvia and Poppy became good friends as allies as the bottom pair of sows in the herd where they lived happily and peacefully.
