Today was the day I said goodbye to my beloved Violet.
Violet was adopted with her companion Connie from the Potteries GPR in 2014. They were known as Tasha and Lola while in rescue. They were a devoted pair and settled in very quickly into our household. Violet very quickly made herself the boss of the piggy room. She decided when it was time for breakfast, tea or snacks, and she had the loudest wheek for a small piggy. They were middle aged when they came to us (about 3) and resisted all attempts for me to bond them with our then existing pair Mr Ted and Mrs Fudge. She was the smallest piggy with the biggest personality. We nicknamed her the pocket rocket for her small but fiery personality.
At 5 she required an emergency spay and removal of a lump from her groin. She sailed through it in true Violet fashion - back home next day eating and drinking, resisting any attempts to help with supported feeding. When Connie died last year I knew it would be difficult to find her a new companion. The simplest solution for me would have been for her to move in with Mollie and Mabel, but she was having none of it. She may have been out-sized and out numbered by them but she was not to be outclassed in a fight and we had to break up a full blown fight with a broom and a dustpan.
Violet eventually accepted the lovely Poppy as a cage mate. After the first few weeks of hair pulling and nipping she finally accepted that the serene Poppy was no challenge to her position and they grew to be close companions. Earlier this year, and with some trepidation, I bonded little Holly with them and they became a very close trio. Violet and Holly could often be found grooming each other. In he old age she had softened and was happy to show a youngster the ropes.
Violet had been slowing down for some time. She had become a regular visitor to the vet with one problem after another. She was always feisty, but a real darling with humans. She loved a cuddle and a chin scratch. This morning during morning cuddles she gave me signs that she was unhappy. We had a review appointment planned today and the vet agreed that it was time to help her on her way to the Bridge before her quality of life deteriorated.
Farewell my little pocket rocket. Be reunited with Connie at the Bridge. We will all miss you xx
