Our two girls, Vanilla and Peanut, are only 1yr olds and they got a bit overweight (not dangerously). It must be old habits, everytime our two old girls squeaked we fed them, as we were trying to keep weight on in their older yrs, and has carried on with these two. We noticed they were getting bellies on them about a month ago and we have always monitored their weights. We only give 3/4 veggies a day and 30g of food each. We get them out for exercise and they just don't wanna know, occassionaly Vanilla will tear around madly whilst Peanut just sits and watches :
Even with the new diet and more exercise, which they dont make the most of (they mainly just go to sleep), they are still managing to put weight on :o
I dont think pigs can be overwieght can they? Their diet doesnt contain much fat as far as i know. There are a lot of people with pigs on here over 3lb, are yours heavier than that? If they're over 4lb i'd get a bit worried, if not I'm sure they're just lovely and chubby! It can be dangerous putting them on diets because they need to be eating little and often.Have you tried putting loads of hidey holes and tubes and maybe some tubes made of newpaper in their run? Mine love messing it all up lol! x
They got dry food and hay at all times so they nibble at that. I've tried putting play things in their cage, they have newspaper bedding which they mainly just eat :, and i put toys out in the dining room when they go out for exercise but as i say they just find a nice spot and go to sleep
Not sure what their weight is in lbs but they about 1138g, i'll double check that tomorrow morning, might be wrong cuz I'm tierd 98)
I just thought they were looking tubby and the fact that they didn't wanna exercise, being so young as well (should be full of energy) just got me a bit worried.
Is there anything i can do to motivate them? I don't wanna chase them around because we are trying to tame them, get them to come to the call etc
Errmm.. i always find mine have mad half hours in their cage more than when they're in the run. They seem to move a lot if they're in an open space too, like in the living room free range with no run or anything, they run round in a piggie train exploring ;D funniest thing ever when they're babies and their little ears flap as they run :smitten:
From personal experience i'd never put a piggie on a diet, too risky :'(
Just give them some more floor time and encourage the hay and pellets O0 O0
btw love their names :smitten: :smitten:
One runs around when ever she is out, even running passed all the food and just enjoying her self. The other one will eat everthing first and then get in the way of the others run around!
You could leave them out for longer and see if the other one will run around given time, but I would not worry. Most piggies are fat and sleep all the time.
Some of my piggies are really chunky and I am glad about that! I think some breeds are bigger than others too. They don`t sound fat to me Have you any pics of them so we can see?
Yup Lennie is an aby x and he is huge, twice the size of most of my others ;D Teddy and Larry are teddies and since I have had them have almost doubled in weight and are very healthy :smitten:
Yeah! I would never put guineas on diets without the advice of a Vet. Yours just sound like chunky piggies (and not that chunky either - I reckon they're about 2.5 lbs - no way is that overweight!) Pampered Piggies sell some stuff to make them "work" for their food which are really good. O0
One of my girls is a chunky wee thing - but she's gorgeous. The other is quite skinny. Its her own fault and she always runs out for a bit of food then goes into the pigloo to eat it while Blossom sits at the bowl and munches her way through it. Mine are the same though - they seem to just sit about when they're out in their run. :smitten:

That sounds like a good idea, they'd get some exercise that way.
And they aren't on diets as such, we just cut down on their veggies really, they used to be fed some almost everytime we went into the kitchen
