one of my guinea pigs is begining to get really big. its not like we overly feed her so idk what to do.is there anything we can do or should we just let them keep eating?
I worry about my one boy's weight as well. I haven't taken him to the vet since I've adopted him, so not sure what his weight is. But he's a lot bigger than the other boy, and has a fatty eye on one side. Is that a sign of obesity?
Some guinea pigs are naturally large, some are naturally dainty. Every pig is different. I have a pig who is only just 2lb and is very healthy, and I have a pig who is 3lb 8oz and is very healthy. Funnily enough these two are pretty close friends.
The best guide to go on is if the pigs belly is touching the floor or drags when they stand tall and walk, then they are overweight.
What dry feed do you feed your pigs, JJpiggy? What size is the cage, and do they get floor/run/exercise time frequently? The actual weight of the pig won't tell us very much as it can be very normal for pigs to weigh anywhere between 2lb-4lb (800g - 1800g) - but regular weighing (once a week) is an important habit to get into.
One of my girl's is a chunky pig - she is 1300g. She's kinda stablised at that weight for some time now. She's basically lazy and doesn't run about like my other girl. Plus she always sits right at the food bowl - while Daisy grabs food and then runs inside to eat it.
I would just keep an eye on her by regular weighing.
