My oldest pig has lost a lot of weight in her very old age. I took her to the vet today for a check up, and the vet also commented on her weight and just said that i need to increase Daisy's calorie intake.
But what foods are best to boost up weight? which foods are highest in fat, that are safe to give to an underweight pig?
thanks :)

EDIT: just wanted to add in... she is now on a course of antibiotics for a mild respiratory infection. so hopefully that wont affect her appitite.

I found READIGRASS to be a usefull fattening product with my Bertie when he was ill and losing weight.

EDIT: just saw you're in Oz... I'm not sure whether you can get it over there... :(

hmmm, yeah i probably cant get readigrass here unfortunatly :( actually there is a lot that you cant get in australia, but can in other countires especially in the way of quality guinea pig pallets. which is really frustrating!
but i will look into it, thanks!

Porridge oats and bran are fattening as well. You can give them dry or soaked.

Many guinea pigs lose weight when getting older.

It might be an idea to go into a horse feed store and ask them what dried grass they do, as I'm sure they'd do something along the same lines as ready grass and graze on. Or they may be able to tell you where you can get it from :))

Glynis and KingBoris&HisFollowers are in Australia, they might know of an alternative? You could PM and ask.

Hope your piggy puts on some pounds (well not literally POUNDS :)p)

wow, i would be worried if she started putting on pounds :S hahaha
thanks everyone :)
I tried to oats idea, i microwaved some oats in water and give it to Daisy, i will go and check later to see if she actually ate it or not.
I do have lucerne hay (i think that’s what it is called) available for her to eat, i know its high in calcium but thats all i have at the moment, so until i find an alternative thats all she has in the way of hay.

Just wanted to add in, as i said shes on Baytril at the moment, can it give piggies loose poops?

.... just wanted to add in, i am giving her 0.15 mL of baytril everyday, as the vet instructed... is that dosage right? it doesnt sound enough to me.

Carrots and broccoli and very fattening and high in sugars. However carrot contains more goodness them broccoli so I would feed her carrot. Her antibiotics may affect her diet a little but so may guinea pigs like carrot, even when they are ill! It may also be a good idea to give her more dry food as they are very fattening to. If she does not eat carrot try sweetcorn.
