My pig Pickle has developed a fatty lump on his haunches, about 2cm to the right of his spine. Its about the size of a pea and firm, it feels like a fatty lump but obviously I can't be sure. It isn't sore or hot, it doesn't appear to be attached to anything (it moves around with the skin if you move it) and he isn't bothered by it. He is a BIG pig and quite fat but it's hard to make him lose weight :/. Do pigs get fatty lumps if overweight (I don't know if he is overweight - last time he had a vet appointment they said he was fine) and what would you suggest doing about it? Could it be a cyst or bite or something?
My friend trained as a vet so I'm going to get her to take a look at it before rushing him to the vet, unless anyone here tells me it's urgent!

Always best to get checked out. My butter has one and it doesn't bother her...fatty lump that is. She's not a fat pig and it doesn't bother her either.

I would get this checked out to make sure it is okay as it could be a number of things.

It's best to check it out. One of my pigs had a similar lump, and in her case it was an abscess that we ended up having removed.

Yes it does sound like an abscess. Piggies can get abscesses and cysts whether they're overweight or normal.

Some years ago I had a piggy with an abscess that grew in size so we ended up having it surgically removed. If it doesn't change size or shape or open and discharge (and the lump is obviously maneuverable within the skin) then you shouldn't worry. Always best to have it actually checked out by a vet though. :-)
