My poor girl had to be spayed last Wednesday due to massive Ovarian cysts which were not responding to any treatment. She had been losing 50g a week and in total has lot 200g in 3 weeks (whilst we were trying the treatment).

She had her op on Wednesday, seemed to come through OK, eating fairly well and up beat. She started to nibble on her stitches though and we were worried about an infection so took her back to my vets and put her on Baytril on Saturday morning (she was not on any antibiotics at this point...they don't recommend them unless needed which I wholeheartedly agree with). Within 3 hours of the Baytril she was constipated and very unhappy. Fortunately I had bought Fibreplex, so I gave her some and within 30 mins she was pooping joyfully again! However, she has gone downhill rapidly since the Baytril and will hardly eat, her weight is now 790g and I am syringe feeding her every few hours, I am also giving her 1ml of Fibreplex 3 times a day to make sure she's not constipated again and she's passing poops OK.

Spoke to my vet who said to take her off the Baytril (her last dose was 0.34 Sunday evening). But she is still very unhappy. I am not sure if its an infection, whether she is just sore (she is on .34 Dog Metacam twice a day) or if the cysts were not the issue and its something else. Maybe the Baytril takes a while for adverse effects to where off.

I am so worried I am going to lose her :-(She's gone from a bouncy happy girl to just sitting int he corner looking so sad.

I have a great cavy savvy vet who is confident its the Baytril and the cysts and nothing else but I am so worried. Next stop vets again tomorrow and I am going to see if she can have Zithromax if she is no better by tonight.
 
I am so sorry to hear all this. Poor little baby. No wonder you are fed up. I really hope she makes a speedy recovery.
 
Sorry to hear this :( So unfair after all she has been through with the operation. If she is not pooing regular it may be worth looking at a gut stimulant such as emeprid (metachlopromide) to make sure everything is being pushed through.

In the end I could'nt bear it any more and rushed her over to the vet (well rather my wonderful mother did as I had to go out to a meeting...I was soooo stressed!). We think she has bloat caused by the reaction to the Baytril, she had a lot of gas and fluid in her. The annoying thing is I had Emeprid and Zantac to hand and was too scared to use it in case it was something else...argh could kick myself now. I have not had a guinea with bloat before but I should have seen it :-(

Anyway, she is over at my lovely mothers at the moment but Mum says she is perking up. She's on Emeprid and Zantac for 24 hours and I have another appointment booked for 6pm tomorrow if she has not improved. She's such a little fighter I hope she pulls through, they are so delicate. Just annoyed I did not think of bloat, cannot see the wood for the trees sometimes.:hb:
 
Please do not blame yourself. Bloat is not easy to notice. Your mum sounds great. I hope your baby picks up soon.
 
Fingers firmly crossed that she will pull through!

Please keep her hand fed and hydrated to make sure that the guts stay operational; every little bit will help. At that stage you won't be able to get much in, so don't fret over amounts.
Bloat can come up quite sneakily, please don't beat yourself up about it. It is not one of the usual side effects of baytril.

I will do. I have been giving her water since she had the op as she has not been drinking much and today started syringing when she stopped eating so hopeful that will help. She is good to be syringe fed although gave me a mighty bite earlier (clearly very annoyed and fed up guinea pig!).

Yes bizarre she reacted within a few hours of the Baytril. She was constipated within 3 hours but the Fibreplex managed to shift things. But clearly not well enough. I am pretty sure its the Baytril as she reacted so quickly after she was given it. I do hope its as simple as that :-(
 
She's just had her second doses of Zantac and emeprid. I am at a loss as to how much to syringe and water her. I am worried as nothing coming out I may be making the problem worse? Giving her 5-6 ml syringe food and 5-10 ml water (she's very thirsty) every 90 mins to 2 hours, is that ok?
 
sorry i have no advice, but healing vibes to your little girl. hope she's on the mend soon & here's to a speedy recovery :)
i know i had a piggy with bloat once, it just came up drastically & within a few hours, with no warning, so i know how much of a shock it can be, don't blame yourself.

Fingers & paws all crossed for you both. keep us updated.xx
PS your mum sounds like mine... shes a fab guinea pig grandma :nod:
