As some of you may know I'll be picking up 2 boars next week. They're 2-3 months old. They're currently on a muesli mix but I will be moving them onto science selective grain free nuggets. I'll be doing the change over slowly over the course of a week.

I was looking on the back of the pack for feeding guide and it said to feed an unlimited amount of nuggets until they're 10 months old. Is this true? Or can I give them 40g of food a day each like it recommends on the pack for adults and seniors?

They'll be getting unlimited amount of Timothy and meadow hay as well as a cup of veggies each per day.

On the pack it says it's got alfalfa in it anyway so would I still need to feed a higher calcium veg alongside 1-2 times a week or should I stick to peppers, coriander, spring greens ect?

What has alfalfa in it, the science selective? If you can you’re better off getting pellets that don’t have alfalfa in them but are grass based. Pellets should be kept to 1 tablespoon per pig per day - approximately 6g. Don’t go by what is on the back of the packaging.

Don’t bother slowly moving them over. I would completely stop the muesli mix as it’s not suitable for them or their dietary needs. Don’t feed high calcium veg too often - spinach, kale, parsley. You can give coriander, bell pepper, lettuce (not iceberg) and cucumber daily. I think spring greens have quite a bit of calcium in them so give occasionally as well.

Sorry misread locust bean for Lucerne. So it does not contain alfalfa. It's Timothy based.

Ah ok I thought the quantity of pellets seemed a bit much.

Ok re the muesli. I just thought it may upset their tummies switching over. I think they're on the tiny friends farm one.

So there's nothing i need that I need to do for young pigs then. Dietary wise treat them like an adult pig?

Nope - once they are weaned they are fed like adult piggies - hay, 50g veg and 1 tbsp pellets

youre likely to get protest from switching from muesli to pellets (they can pick out the sweet and nicest tasting bits from muesli) but don’t worry as long as they get hay, they will be fine

Ah ok then that's easy to do. I thought it'd be the case. It kind of threw me when it said unlimited pellets on the bag.

Ok I won't worry too much then if they protest over pellets. They'll eat when they're hungry

Don’t give them more pellets because you think they’re hungry. Just make sure there’s plenty of hay. They may not eat them at first so just be aware of that. Also ask what veggies they’ve been eating. Hopefully some so they’re not entirely new to them.
