So..with all the stress of bonding, Shelly went and got mites :td: at first I thought it was barbering as the hair looked chewed off rather than bald, but no, confirmed as mites. So of course off I go to get them treatment, we have ivermectin drops to give them once a week for 3 weeks so there I go, popping each piggy lovingly on my lap after weighing them to give the correct dose, give them a treat and put them back. Alls well, I figured. Until a couple of days ago, I notice little red marks on my leg, itchy but quite small, I think maybe my eczema has fancied a change of location so ignore it for a bit.

But nope! I have mite bites :vom::vom::vom:
I'm not normally squeamish but I'm pretty grossed out now :lol!: why did I put them on my lap! Lesson learned, put a towel down or treat them on a table. At least I dont 'have' mites, just bites but bleurgh!
I can't even cuddle the pigs to make me feel better because I dont want anymore flipping bites anywhere XD its a good job I love those hairy little beans!

Oh no :( that is a real shame. Mites are vile.... Megan got them on Christmas day once her back was awful

Mite bites? I have never heard of this @Wiebke Sounds sore.

Sorry about the eczema I suffer too from it, unless you have eczema it is hard to understand how itchiness can be as bad as pain

Horrible arent they :( Shelly looks a right state but none of the others are losing hair, just scratching a lot! But Shellybean had the worst of everyones dominance during the bonding, since treatment though she has put Delilah down a peg and taken control of the herd so I'm assuming she feels better now, hopefully by their second treatment she will start to look a bit less haggard.

I hadnt either but according to the nhs thing (I'm a bit of a hypochondriac so I had to check XD) it can happen from putting pets with mites on your lap so I assume thats what itll be. I cant think of anything else it could be. Luckly it's just itchy so far.

Thanks, yeah it really can be, luckily mine only seems to surface every 7 years or so and it's on the way out now. Sorry you have it too :( it's a pain to live with! I dont do myself any favours though, mine is mainly set off by hay

I had a really bad patch of eczema on my hands a few years ago that no amount of different creams cured. One or two sessions of Acupuncture though and it went away within a week and hasn't come back. I would recommend you try acupuncture if your eczema persists. Also Acupuncture has stopped my bad migraines and also turned off my hot flushes for a few months and then I went back for more treatment when the hot flushes got unbearable again.

I've been bitten all over by mites before too (Years ago from a Gerbil) and they are so itchy! Thankfully they only bite and don't infest us!

Acupuncture has never crossed my mind! I might give it a go, ive had it on and off since I was born, used to be head to toe as a baby so if I could actually get rid of it, thats be great!

Wow it was hard enough putting drops on the piggies! I cant imagine trying to treat little gerbils, that must have been fun. My old lot were never still XD

Yes it certainly was a mission of patience! :lol!:

Mange mites can bite you, but not infest you as they'll starve. Not pleasant when it happens, though! :(

All the best for getting on top of it all quickly!

Thanks Weibke! Yeah..it's not the best moment of my piggy keeping experience thats for sure, but I imagine it's not that bad compared to what the poor piggies are feeling. I keep looking at Shelly and feeling awful for how much of a state she looks. She's chewed a bald patch onto her back :( hopefully by next treatment theyll have stopped scratching and the hair will be growing back.

If you do decide to go for Acupuncture you need to make sure the person you choose is registered with the British Acupuncture Council.
