Now administering AB with a syringe I can do but not Fibreplex probiotic!
Bob is on Firbreplex 3 times a day as he has soft poos and the boys look like they've been walking in mud! He's very well behaved it's just me that struggling to administer it as it's in such a big syringe and comes out in one big gloopy mess. Has anyone got any tips as most of it ends up down his chin or he spits it out! rolleyes
I have tried spreading it between two slices of cucumber and he wasn't having any of it! :))

I have had trouble getting Fibreplex down piggies in the past too - it literally goes down their fronts rather than down into their mouths!:))

I found the easiest way to administer it was to actually suck up the recommended dose into a normal 1ml syringe which I could easily pop into the piggy's mouth far enough back so it didn't get spat out again - good luck!

I also had trouble giving it to Lily when she was having it, did exactly the same as Caviesgalore although on occassion it was mixed with a little bit of CC and given that way.

I find it easiest to put it on my finger and wipe it inside piggie's mouth...but then I am a bit of a meanie when it comes to meds!

I've been wiping it off his chin and putting it on his lips to try and get a bit more in him.

I'll keep trying! Poor Bob, it's doing the trick though thank goodness.

Spooky - been delivering the same to Beech this last 24 hrs...and has deffo stopped his sticky poos from turning into fully fledged runs..I really thought yesterday that he was "destined for antibiotics" but suddenly they (the poos) started getting better in appearance/output

I insert the syringe right into the side of his mouth and he chews on it...and thence deliver 0.5ml quantities.it IS a slow process.

.I realise that (perhaps for the first titme in his life) Beeche may be co-operating so this may not work for other peepies and piggies - in the past I have expressed it from the syringe and mixed it with CC to get it into piggies

Beech is also on instruction from vet being given zantac 4mg/kg twice a day - this too has helped, as has withdrawing everything but small amount of high fibre pellets (cavy cuisine) and unlimited oxbow hay which, bless him, he has been chomping on continuously

Good luck

x

Are all my best to Beech hope his tummy's better soon.
Bob is much better, he's got his appetite bag and poos are much better. I gave them limited veggies for 4 days to see if this would clear it up and to try and work out which pig it was having problems, as it didn't work we took him to them all to the vets, suspecting it was Bob. The Fibreplex seems to be doing the trick for Bob, we've started Spike on it as it seems his gut is producing some rather nasty smells aswell!
Spike is an angel! I moved towards him with it and he grabbed it and started sucking the end of the syringe before I'd even started squeezing it. It of course went half in and half down his chin but he loved it! I've just squirted it on to a plastic spoon since and he's just licked it of and chewed the spoon til he's finished every last drop!
I swear he's got a drug problem! You should see him with Metacam he'll steal the syringe off you!

Hee hee hee! A piggy with a drug problem, get him to AA!

I have pigs that hate it too!

I do it in 1/4 or 1/2 ml goes, and syringe it into their cheek which seems to get most of it in their mouth. I find following with a small amount of their favourite food also helps it stay in

Gosh it was nearly two and half years ago since I made this post. How time flies. I've had a lot of practice with fibreplex and ABs since then, got it down to a tee! :)) There's the good ones who love it and will try and eat the spoon to get every last drop and then the ones who do the moon walk and reverse at the sign of the syringe! I've learnt to be more confident and not let them make such a fuss about meds now. Wish I hadn't had to have so much practice though.
