One of my guinea pigs has a fifth nail on his front paws. Can anyone tell me why this has happened? And is it a good idea to clip them etc? Any info would be great. :)

It could be a result of inbreeding or it could just be a genetic defect :)

I dont know much about them but heaps of other people will :D

One of my rescues has one, I just clip it as normal. They're all different though and if you're worried take him to the vet.

I have noticed Digby has one I dont think anyone noticed as it is a bit long I will trim it the same as all the others.

Dont piggies only have 3 on the front paws and 4 on the back ?

Other way round!

I too have seen a piggy with 5 front toes, although the 5th had no bones in it it didn't seem to cause any problems.

Aah okies :)

Like people have said it is nothing to worry about, however, if you are concerned get him checked out by a vet. O0

Good stuff, thanks for that. Just wanted to check, they've had them a while but I've forgot when I've been to the vet as they've never caused any problems. Thanks again ;D
