finaly trimed their nails

ive tried it a few times and peanut just wouldnt allow it.
squirmy, squeak loudly to make me think i hurt him.

i read off of a website somewhere, really read it.
calmed myself down and grabbed goober.
great he had black nails. my first time actually doing it on my own and i couldnt see where i had to cut. i did fine, he did fine.
grabbed squirt, did fine. then it was peanuts turn. he did FINE. i went to his front nails after cause they were a bit long and he didnt like that.

i felt calm and i think they knew that. cause the last few times ive/weve tried to cut peanuts nails hes freaked out.
now what is weird is that all of them have dried up poopie on their nails and stuff and when i try to rub it off and scratch it off and they pulled back and squeaked as if i hurt them. all of them did. i dont understand.
 
The 'poop' thingys are called spurs. Best not to pull them off really as it will hurt. However, if they grow too long it would be worth trimming them slightly, but it might be worth getting someone a bit more experienced to do it cos if you do it wrong, they can bleed. ;)
 
so the spurs, are bad? or do all guinea pigs have them?

and i did fine trimming their nails..now i guess its just the spurs =[
 
is it normal for the piggies to have big pieces of hard dried skin stick out the sides of their feet? My one girl has them, I thought it was bumble foot that she got when she was owned previously and not properly cared for. Now I noticed a small one on the right front foot of our other girl. Can I trim them back? not far of course don't want to cause bleeding.
 
Spurs are usually easy to trim; just don't cut down to the skin, leave a few millimetres of spur above the skin. Spurs tend to look like flaps of soft skin growing from the foot pads.

Some pigs do also get dried poop on their nails.
 
no they arent spurs then because i just looked at the picture.

its like a layer of poop on their nails. but it hurts them for me to scratch it off. i dont think it is anything more than poop just dried on then
 
Maybe give them a very shallow bath to loosen it up if it really is dried poop? If you just want their feet in the water, I'd think that putting 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water in the bathtub and letting them boot around in there would loosen it up and make it easier to remove. Just make sure, if you go that route, that you dry their bellies and feet thorougly afterwards.
 
Mine have what looks like dried poo on their feet but its not, its just the way their feet are really... If you are not sure what it is then ask a vet... Dont try and remove it if it hurts them...:)

I dont trim my piggies nails because firstly ones a wriggler and needs two people rolleyes and my boar has black nails... They all have very long quicks as well which is a for me because i notice most peoples piggies quicks are nice and short!

So its a trip to the vets when i notice one starts curling to the side and thats when i know its time!
 
ahh I looked at the link, it's spurs.
So it's normal. that's good. I trimmed Bessie's nails tonight, its so easy to do hers since she has white nails. Harley isn't too bad either, just a little tricker as her nails are darker, but at least I can still see the quick.
