Hello, with everything going on in the news I wanted to create a fire safety plan for me and my pigs in the event if a fire does happen. I have five pigs, four dogs and a betta fish. The dogs and fish I'm not worried about as I can easily grab them it's the pigs I'm worried about. I have a lot of valuable and non-replaceable family items as well in my home. How could I create a fire safety plan for all my animals and my valuables?

Hello that’s difficult - you could put the valuables etc in a metal box as protection from fire.
However if you have a fire in your home you wont have enough time to get dogs/fish/ piggies out let alone valuables.
Do you live alone ? If not make a plan with family members , one gets the dogs, one gets the fish , one gets the piggies. The best thing is to have a pet carrier nearby and a box to help you herd the piggies into the carrier.
The best thing is prevention really - smoke alarms , carbon monoxide alarm and unplug everything when not in use.
It’s something that we should all plan for.

Also have boilers etc regularly serviced and an electrical check

I dont live alone I'll definitely put the valuables in a fire protective box, the dogs and fish won't be a problem to get out it's just the pigs since they're a little more difficult to grab 😅 I'll definitely see what I can use to put them in case of such an emergency

I agree, trying to rescue animals during a fire is very dangerous. That being said, it is still a great idea having a preparedness plan in place in case of a fire. Not sure if your community offers this or not, but several of the fire departments near me have the ability to offer oxygen to pets after a fire with special masks that fit different animal sizes.

Having an evacuation plan for hurricanes is probably a better bet for you. Knowing where you can go during an evacuation that is pet friendly is really important. I use to live in Florida and have family living there currently. My uncle and aunt know where they can go with their cockatoo if they need to evacuate.

I have a carrier prepped and ready to go on top of my pigs' cage just in case, but realistically I know that if the house is on fire it's unlikely it will be safe for me to get them ☹️ Also, I'd imagine that smoke inhalation would get serious very quickly for them, so even if I could get them there's a good chance they won't make it.

With this in mind we do what we can in terms of prevention - alarms in the kitchen and at the top of stairs, services for things like the boiler, and taking care with wires, turning off equipment etc. With the UK so dry and hot at the moment I guess I should really start to consider what we need to do with our outside space to minimise risk of wildfires, too 😐

Nothing more to add to the helpful advice above.

Yesterday in my area there were two fires in farmers fields where they had been baling hay. One was close to residential areas and 3 streets were evacuated. What came from that was that people weren’t prepared with pet carriers. So there was an appeal for anyone local to bring crates and carriers to the evacuation buildings for people to use to secure their animals in whilst they were away from home.

So that’s made me think about making sure my carriers are somewhere easy to grab if needed. I have 3 cats as well as my pigs that would need carriers and it’s made me realise I don’t own enough carriers if I was to need to remove everyone at the same time.

In terms of prep, I’ve no idea with animals, practically speaking it might be nigh on impossible to get them 😔 but we have a couple of external hard drives for the computer and update regularly. One stays with my in-laws and they have one that stays with us. You could have copies of important documents in a fireproof box stored with someone else and store their copies in return. Not ideal as lots needs to be original but might help with the red tape if the worst happens. I keep meaning to put ours in a fireproof box, as it is they are in a filing box that is easy to grab. Tbh I don’t think I’d be in the mindset to remember to grab it!

Thank you Bean_piggies for making us all be prepared …..just in case ! It’s good to have a plan. I did when my children lived at home but hadn’t really thought about since moving 18 mths ago. I am now tho !
There is an old saying that ‘if you’re prepared for the worst to happen then it won’t happen’ or something like that !

Of course with everything going on you can always never be too prepared, I love my piggies and they've always helped me at my worst. I can't imagine my life without them! ❤️
