Hi everyone,
So today has been a major health day for Michael and Jackson as they have both been petted but also I have discovered lice! So they were treated with the spray and the cage sterilised and also treated and bedding completely replaced. A few days ago I had purchased a bag of hay which was swept off the floor at my local Norco rural store and found out that it was lucerne hay infested with parasites and insects and plastic rubbish! It wasn’t used, thank the lord, but I absolutely do not recommend norco rural for bedding and also check your guinea pigs for parasites as well for my top advice according to what I’ve just been through today!

sincerely

Aw! I’m so sorry that happened, and thank you for informing us about Norco rural!

It is always important to have piggies seen by a vet when you suspect parasites.
Most over the counter and pet store products are just not strong enough to fix the problem, and end up causing more problems in the long run.
What product were you prescribed?

Oh I bought the spray from my local pet store who also have a vet who works there. The product is not prescribed. It’s called Aristopet mite and mange spray. It has worked so far killing about 95% of the mites that were on the guinea pigs. There’s still a few running around but I will take the animals to the vet clinic as soon as I have sufficient funds. I previously used most of the funds to fix my mountain bikes so I could have my means of transport back as I am on my L plates and naturally I can’t drive on my own until I get my provisional licence. But I have now got some money and I really think a trip to the vet would do the guinea pigs some good!

It's always best to use something that is prescribed by the vet rather than an over-the-counter med. The issue with them is that they are usually not strong enough. And also using something without knowing exactly what is wrong with your piggy can mask or worsen the symptoms/illness. You said they had lice. Do they have lice or mites?

I would get them seen soon as - perhaps ask the vet about a payment plan if they can allow it.

It’s definitely lice. I used to study invertebrates and before I kept guinea pigs, I had a whole range of terrestrial invertebrates as pets and my most prized invertebrate was my centipede who died in November last year and was the longest living and last to die in the collection and it had mites which I also studied. You can tell lice and mites easily by the head and thorax. Anyway enough of my riff raff. I will take them to the vet on my bike and they can ride in the bike trailer while I get them to the veterinarian clinic. But yeah, it has worked. I will be starting my certificate II in Animal Studies at tafe this semester 2 so I can get a job in working with animals such as at a pet store but I won’t be becoming a veterinarian surgeon because it will be too difficult and I didn’t complete year 11 or 12, and, because of my mental illness and constantly being bullied and threatened by other peers and even the teachers, I had to drop out of school anyway. So that’s that and thanks for your feedback and input. Much appreciated. The guinea pigs are being monitored every 30 minutes during the day

It must be lice if you can see the moving as mites are invisible to the naked human eye. I would definitely go to a vet to get an appropriate strength treatment to get on top of them. If the product you are using isn't strong enough you could start building resistance to treatment

I was asking because you use mange spray for lice. It's good you're getting them seen by a vet. Always the best way rather than using over-the-counter medicines. Let us know how it goes.
