hi again! my last post is not giving me the advice i most want to recieve so here it is cleared up, we are getting 2 girl pigs tomorrow and we have only ever had boys, is there anything different we need to know, are girls any different, eating habbits? illness? behaviour?

also one of the new girls is 17 months old, we are wondering if she will be calmer than our young boys and other new girl, because i have met older pigs before and they have been really docile ? help!?

You will not need to treat your girls any differently. Some people find sows slightly shyer then boars. I would not call 17 months an older piggy. One of mine is five and she is very active and always demands food!

they are much the same apart from slightly calmer and not as dominant but it depends on the pig. I think I mentioned on the last one that age doesn't mean she will be docile. What matters is how much they have been handled. Depending on the size of them you may need to feed a different amount from your boars but that's something you have to figure out when you have them

I think that it entirely depends upon the pig in question. I had a group of four girls up until October last year, of them: one lived till 7.5 (so 17m is definitely not old) and she was very friendly, and happy to be at the bottom of the hierachy, My next oldest girl was about 3.5 when she died of heart failure and she was the most friendly pig ever, she always wanted attention and was very calm. My other remaining two are both reasonably skittish, Ruby moreso than Tia. They are 2years and 18months respectively, and have been handled by us since May 2012, they are both fine once you get them out but Ruby hates being picked up and Tia scares at the slightest movement.

I have found girls do bicker quite a lot, and with their seasons their behaviours can change and they tend to display dominance behaviours more commonly associated with boars, such as: rumblestrutting, chasing and mounting.

I have recently got a neutered boar to bond with my two sows and he is quite different personalitywise, he is very laid back (infact he is asleep right now), loves cuddles but loves chasing his girls more. He popcorns all the time and likes zooming around.

You'll be just fine! My little herd do bicker but what do you expect with females ;)
I do have my suspicion that there is some peeing on each other going on but have yet to witness it!

Maple and Rambo are my two braver ones - Patch tends to poke her nose out and Lucky and Pecan rarely come out until I've left!
