I've noticed a couple of days ago that Elsa my teddy has flaky skin around her spine. I know flaky skin can be the first signs of mites or a fungal infection, but she's not shown anything else.. no itching, no scabs and no hair loss, it's literally just flaky skin. I read that teddies are more prone to flaky skin than other breeds.. is this correct? If so, is there anything I can use for her? Or is it best to be safe and have her checked by a vet for mites?
Her companion Crunchie (abby) was treated for mites last year when I found scabs on her back, but he decided not to treat Elsa as well :S

Took a couple of pictures.. not the best quality but she's not keen on me poking about in her skin! She's fine being stroked normally though

I would get her checked to be on the safe side if it is not normally like this always best to catch mites or fungal at beginning. Our rex piggy has scurfy skin but not huge flakes. We know over time this is just her skin type.

No signs of baldness flinching when touching or signs of irritation?

I would recommend have her vet checked to be on the safe side. "Teddy skin" is always a something that you arrive at via a process of elimination.

Some teddies are more prone to flaky skin that others; they have a very dense, badly ventilated coat and are more prone to skin issues. My Nerys has had it quite badly at times (after having had both mites and fungal treatment), but her sister Nia never showed any problems.

Thanks for your advice guys :) sounds it's mostly likely nothing to worry about but I'll get her checked soon as I can to be sure! :)

My Barley does get similar and his has been narrowed down to teddy skin. We do occasionally give him an Imaverol dip though which does seem to help. I would get the vet to check her over though just in case it is the start of a fungal issue. Keep an eye out for skin that is pinker than usual though as that is also a sign of fungal.
