hii y’all, if any of you remember me, my boy who’s had a few dentals done this year and refused to eat any hay for three months straight is now doing perfectly fine and munching on hay as we speak!

but i have an entirely different issue now which i have never faced before - flies. the weather is getting warmer, it’s pretty much typical summer temperatures with rain storms every few days. we also live in a rural place, so it’s to be expected.

we’ve been killing the flies, but i am absolutely terrified to use any bug repellents or sprays in the house, not only because of pipi but also because of my parrot (they are on entirely different sides of the house, so it’s not a major worry if i don’t get 100% parrot safe suggestions).

what i have never seen before was these small white things on pipi’s bedding which i initially thought were plant seeds that must have fallen of something he has in his hay. it happened another two times and sure enough, it’s fly eggs.

we use those puppy training pee pads that are washable and made out of some natural material, and needless to say i immediately washed it and switched it. i have also been checking him every few hours as i have been faced with myiasis before.

of course i also place his hide in different areas of his cage, so he isn’t laying on any wet spots, and i’ve been doing this alongside throwing out any old food within hours for quite a while.

i searched up what i could do and someone suggested a fly trap of sorts with vinegar and dish soap - it helped, but not entirely (there can be up to 20 new flies in the room every day, no matter how much we ventilate or kill them). i know some plants naturally repel them, and there are also sprays with those, but i haven’t been able to buy any yet.

what can i do in the meantime until next week when i can get those?

thank you! i was thinking about buying those, but (and this might be the parrot owner in me) i was worried about fumes. most i found in physical stores were meant to be around livestock, and the store staff couldn’t exactly tell me how it’d be around pets. i did however find one that’s all natural online and estimated arrival is one to two business days! 😄

The ones I used were odour free and were hung from the roof of the shed above the hutches out of reach of the animals. 👍

I use them and no ordour and work very well ! Very light so no risk of damage - I have one hung over the end of my c&c
Also my dog loves chasing flies and has caught a couple and it’s very entertaining 😂
