I have just been out in the piggy shed topping up hay and generally making a fuss of everyone only to find someone was screaming, usually when another piggy was near.

On closer inspection it turned out to be Flo and when I took her out and put her on my lap her head is tilting over to the left i.e. her nose is turning towards her side slightly. I have a vet appointment in just under an hour but wanted some advice to go armed with. Does this sound like a middle ear infection? Anyone?

Thanks.

I am no expert but yes it does to me, ear infections are so painful. Good luck at the vets and let us know how she gets on. Dont forget to get a pro biotic to give alongside any antibiotics she may be given :)

It does sound like it to me, they do get a wry neck with ear infectons. Let us know how you get on at the vets, poor Flo.x

Good luck at the vets. O0

What is the antibiotic of choice for ear infections Baytril or Septrin? Can't remember!

Might be a good idea to pick up some cc as well and maybe some organic baby food (veg and fruit) just incase she goes off her food. What with Christmas round the corner and shops being shut etc :(

Got to pick Ryan up from school now but please let us know how she gets on at vets :)

Good thinking, I usually have some in stock, will just go and check it is all still in date - they do choose their moments don't they! I was only at the vets yesterday picking up some food for the cat and made the fatal mistake of wishing everyone a happy Christmas! That will teach me!

Off to snuggle Flo up now, will report back a bit later. Please sending healing vibes everyone.

Tried looking up ear infections on here too, no mention of antibiotics on any though, sorry.

Sorry to hear about little Flo :'(
Healing wheeks coming her way :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:, paws crossed too O0

Hi all, back from the vets. Flo nibbled on some fine beans and carrot all the way and didn't make a sound!

The vet gave her a thorough check up, heart, lungs, eyes etc., etc., and apart from her left ear having quite a bit of wax in it and her head tilting ever so slightly to the left she seems ok. Her left eye was also slightly watery. The vet said her right ear is clear, but she didn't want to push her instrument too far down into the left one because of the wax. I have to say she seemed much better than when I saw her in the shed/on my lap, her head was definitely turning to the side and she was screaming, obviously in a great deal of pain :'(.

The vet thought that the most likely cause was an inner ear infection so she wanted to start her on antibiotics straight away. She gave her a shot of Baytril and I have got to give her 20ml twice daily for 7 days, starting tomorrow. I also got some Bio Lapis and Science Recovery (they didn't have CC in stock), however I feed Cavy Cuisine so if all else fails I can grind that down and mix it with warm water, should the need to syringe feed arise.

Another thought I've had since I got home is could it be ear mites? She hasn't been scratching (any more than normal) and her coat doesn't show any signs of mites? Not sure what the signs of ear mites are apart from dirty ears and scratching. Although she has wax in her ears, the inside flap and outer area both like quite clean. What are peoples thoughts about treating with Ivomec just in case and would I need to leave it until I have finished the abs?

Flo was really happy to be home and was very pleased to see the others, it was so sweet they all crowded round the carrier to see how she was . :smitten:

Thanks to all who took the time to reply, it's great having some piggy people to talk too! Will keep you updated. x

How flipping cute is that?!?!?!?!?!?!

That is great she is getting treatment :) You are so super organised! I would say unlikely mites as there would be flaking/scabbing/redness etc and personally, I wouldn`t overload her by giving ivomec as well. See how she goes on the baytril. Poor little thing, it will possibly upset her tummy.
Hope she is back on top form soon O0 :smitten: :smitten:

Hopefully the antibiotics will do the trick. :)
Keep us updated.

HI

Glad she is doing okay.

A while ago we had a guinea pig that had a lot of wax in his ears and he was given some drops to clean them, unfortunately I can't remember the name of the stuff though, we got this at the vets though.

Jaye.

Just re-read my post, the abs dose should read 0.2ml not 20ml! I think I need a drink and a lie down in a nice darkened room! ;D

Otodex is good for wax build up :) I think it can be got from some pet shops and sph supplies do it.

Re: Flo in Pain - Update

Just thought I would let you know how Flo has got on today. We gave her the first oral dose of Baytril this morning, which she took like a good girl, but she obviously didn't like the taste because once I removed the syringe she put her front paws up to her face and frantically rubbed her nose and mouth :(. Thankfully she is still eating well and so far the meds haven't affected her stomach. She's a good girl with the syringe at the moment so am able to get the Bio Lapis into her as well.

She is happy when she's being cuddled (I don't need an excuse!) and quite content to snuggle up next to another piggy, but if anyone she's not too keen on gets too near to her she screams (and I mean screams) blue murder. I've never experienced this before, no-one is hurting her, I guess she is just letting everyone know she feels under the weather and is warning them not to pester her. Fingers crossed the ABs knock any infection on the head.

Sorry to hear you have problems with Flo Sandra. Are you able to put a tiny drop of orange juice and water with the Baytril, it's the only way we can get it in ours, I think it's pretty disgusting! Have you got a good pro biotic for her, we have some Avipro Plus if you need some, we're not far from you?

Hi Julie, long time no see! I've got some Bio Lapis thank you, which Flo seems happy to take. Putting some orange juice/water with the baytril is a good idea, thinking about it I usually do add some, but it's such a long time since I last used Baytril (have had Septrin recently with the bladder probs) that I forgot! Poor Flo her poor little face was all screwed up! From what I can remember I think the Baytril is quite bitter.

Nice to see you around.

Thanks Sandra, I guessed you would have some pro-biotic anyway, but I know these things sometimes catch us out! ;D (well, me anyways!) Poor llittle Flo, I hope she gets better soon and the Baytril does it's job.
