I rescued our lovely girl Oreo on Wednesday from a bad situation.
She will not eat hay despite my best attempts and turns her nose up at nuggets. I don't have a clue what she was fed before I got her as there was no food in the hutch or bedding. I found multiple corn husks and a few mushrooms in the two inches of poo with a sprinkle of sawdust I scrapped out of her hutch.
Any ideas on getting her to eat nuggets or hay? I currently have Timothy hay ( from my bunnies its from hay hamper ) and some softer meadow hay. I tried green oat readigrass too but no interest in that either.
She eats vegetables fine with no issues. I have a vet appointment on the 28th as its the first available with the guinea savvy vet x

Oh gosh poor piggy.

it’s going to take a while for her to learn what she should be eating. All you can really do is ensure she has lots of fresh hay at all times and hopefully she will figure it out.

Is she living with other piggies now or in quarantine? I’m only really thinking because they learn from each other so if she is in quarantine then it won’t be so easy in the immediate time, but if and when she is bonded with other piggies, then she will watch and learn from them

Yes great advice there from @Piggies&buns guinea pigs learn what to eat from their friends, a healthy diet may be a culture shock to a new piggy from a bad situation, but nothing is more tempting to eat than what the other piggies are eating! Once she gets some company who eat hay she should be fine, but its worth getting the vet to check her back teeth as piggies who havent had enough hay often have overgrown molars that can then prevent them from being able to chew hay properly.

Oreo is lucky to have found a lovely home with you.
Hope that love and patience will help her to settle into a healthy life

Thank you all.

Had a breakthrough with the hay. We mixed her a few carrot shavings into a pile of hay. She eat some with the carrot. Not a huge amount but still a few strands 😁.
I'll be getting her a friend in the new year once the rescues local to me start rehoming again ( they close for rehoming over the Christmas period) x
