So i was cleaning the guinea pigs litter boxes and one of them has small mushrooms growing in it. i looked it up and they can grow in as little as 4 days... they didn't seem to be eaten and were burried under a pile of hay my piggy took out of the feeder and peed on. i'm assuming the spores came from they hay out in the country side. Any thing you guys think i can do or if it something to even worry about?

Hi

I would not worry too much if your piggy hasn't been in direct contact with/eaten any of it; just deep clean the cage and its furnishings and throw the batch of hay away in case there are more fungal spores in it. Stuff can sometimes come with hay.

If you have concerns, please switch to twice weekly cleans instead of just a weekly one. That should take care of the problem.

i live in canada we have a bunch of different mushroom species. trying to get hay without spores on it is like trying to get hay that doesn't have any grasshopper on it... bon chance with that. but its good to know its not something where its like "Oh no those a guinea pig death mushrooms... they kill thousands of guinea pigs every year."

I have to clean my girls litter trays once daily and most times they need a full disinfectant. They wee a lot in them xx
yeah i think i'll have to start deepcleaning with rubbing alcohol every other month or so to help wash away built up nitrates ect.

Can you clean out the litter tray more often? Occasionally I miss the odd poop or two and they start turning into a "Science Experiment".
they love to hide their poops! i have the odd fuzzy surprise attacked to their wooden hut that i missed cause it stuck to the wood and i didn't notice.
