Hi everyone,
Ive just picked Francesca up and noticed what looks to be two "shaved" spots either side of her.Now obviously I havent been shaving her, but she looks bald! Its not red, or patchy and it doesnt look sore in anyway - ive checked the other two and they're fine. any ideas? Ive checked her fur so it isnt lice or anything like that. I did catch her nibbling at the area though, but not accessively.

Have her checked for ovarian cysts. With her history of difficult behaviour, she would be a prime candidate. Enquire after hormonal treatment rather than operation - the CCT (Cambrige Cavy Trust) near Huntingdon may have more info on that. http://www.guinealynx.info/ovarian_cysts.html

Oh my gosh you have me so worried now. Ive just checked her nipples and they do seem to be large and a little crusty...Whats the hormonal treatment like? And do you know the general price we're looking at for this treatment? It says that the hormonal treatment is usually just a tempory measure?

I have no experience with hormonal treatment because Fflur's ovarian cysts were so big and still growing that they needed to be operated.

From other people's remarks on the forum I have heard that a repeated course of treatment usually does the trick. Rodentologists and some vets will do this treatment, but not all.

Could you contact Laura-CCC4 on her health website here; she can hoepfully give you more detailed information: http://www.guineapighelpline.com/

Hey Lisa,

Please don't stress yourself over the possibility of cysts. Is the hair loss on her flanks (sides of her abdomen)? If she is known for particularly stroppy or dominant behavour, and she also has enlarged nipples, I agree with Wiebke that cysts are likely.

There is some info on my preferred treatment options here:

I paid £10 per injection for the HCG therapy on one of my past sows, she had two injections, each one four weeks apart. However I did not pay any consultation or diagnostic fee, as Lottie was diagnosed and treated by Vedra at the CCT.

If it's any comfort to you, just the other day I discovered an ovarian cyst in one of my sows, recognised from the "bubble wrap" texture. She turned out to be one of those cases where on palpating it, it burst - and that's not as bad as it sounds! Vedra has had a few cases like this and I believe the fluid is reabsorbed by the body. Most cysts do require some intervention though, especially if they continue to grow and lead to discomfort in the sow.

Yes the hair loss is only on her sides. When I spoke to the vet she gave the impression that hormonal treatments would need to be an ongoing thing rather than if she had the operation, to solve the problem. If there was a way to get rid without the danger of putting her under then id rather that, but they do not do the hormonal treatment at my vets. Do you think its paining her? she doesnt seem to be in pain but I have caught her nibbling at it ocasionally. So would you say by the hair loss that this is one of those cases that needs intervention? I know its kind of hard to say without seeing her....
