I think I had read something online somewhere about not having rabbits and guineas because rabbits carry something that guineas can get. Is that true?
My friend has been wanting a guinea for a while but since I don't have any ready right now so she decided to get a rabbit instead. However she's still interested in getting a guinea in the future. Is it okay to have both? Or will the rabbit pass something off to the guinea?

You can not house guinea pigs and rabbits together, you can have them in separate cages and not put them in the run together.
The rabbit will need a myxi injection.

Hiya,

I agreee with HM, a rabbit can kill a guina by kicking out. I feel so sad for those rabbits and guineas who are housed together and have formed good bonds but they shouldn't be together just to be on the safe side.

Along with what has been said, rabbits and guineas have differing dietry needs.

I rescued a piggie Taffy, years ago who had been kept with a bun, she had a lesion on her ribs where she had been kicked :'( I lost her within a year to pneumonia :'( Then Rusty had been kept with a bun and had been given her food and was in a terrible state, as a lack of vit C, also my eldest boar Basil and Barney were kept with a male bun :tickedoff: and they had been regularly mounted by him! :tickedoff: I got them in time luckily though now it seems my darling Bas is making his way to the Bridge to be with his mate Bobby-Elvis :'( I have never agreed with keeping the two together, I keep both but seperately, two guineas same sex are ideal and a neutered female bun and neutered male bun ideal too!

I think like others have said as long as they don't have contact it is okay.

Ah, I'll pass all this good info on to her. Thanks so much! :smitten:

Bordatella is the bug that you're talking about and is passed in the air, to guard against any chance of the guineas catching this its best to have them as far apart as possible- seperate sheds even- depends how far your friend wants to go...

Yes! That's what it was.
There is no way to prevent the piggies from this then besides keeping them in seperate sheds?
If this is the case then I'll just tell her it is not possible for her to have the both of the pets liek she would like and she'll have to stick to rabbits. :)

My next door neighbour keeps her rabbit cage on top of the piggy cage (they were built together and are 3ft by 1ft :o )
I dont think they've encountered problems yet (except from obesity and lots of colds in the winter >:().
In very cold weather and fireworks night my pigs and bun are kept facing eachother with their cages a few feet away from eachother but the buns vaccinated and its the only soundproof room in the house cause fireworks terrify them. Havent encountered problems yet either.
