I'm running a bit low on veg today. I've got some lovely lettuce and greens left, but nothing to add to it for the piggies. Can I defrost some sweetcorn (not on the cob) and add a handful of that to the bowl for variety?

I wouldn't, all veg should be fresh.
Read somewhere it is unadvisable but people probably have. I always make sure our lot have enough supplies to the extent that I spend more on their food than the family's rolleyes

Hello i use some defrosted veg for myy guinea pigs when I'm runny low and so far ive had no problems its not regular like but maybe the last day of the month etc they seem to eat it ok

Hi. Are you thinking they must have variety every day for vit C intake? My understanding is that as long as you are feeding a guinea pig dry food with vit C included like Excel, then you should be OK with that and plain greens for today. Then you don't have to risk the defrosted veg.
There is also a good list of herbs, weeds and grasses etc which you can feed in the sticky thread 'Shoppping list' above so if you are a bad gardener like me, you can hunt around in the weedy garden for extras!:)

I don't think your even supposed to give them fridge cold veg so can't inagine anything previously frozen would be very good for them, If i run out then they get nothing or i put them on the grass or pick them some if you don't have a run, it won't hurt them to go without once in a while

Oh they're getting plenty of forages in the lawn atm as they're out in the run from about 9.30am - 4pm every day, weather permitting :)

Always thought frozen veg was supposed to have more vit C as it's flash frozen at source rather than transported for days before it reaches us? Also wondered if it could be a choking hazard (but then I suppose their guinea pig pellets are about the same size and they don't choke on them!)

Will steer clear anyway, and just give the lettuce and greens to be safe :) Thanks all!

If they are out on the lawn for that long they are probably eating allsorts - including greenfly for protein:) Yum

They should be fine with just the lawn and the greens and lettuce :)

I think frozen veg is a no no, not sure why though! I remember trying to give mine some once that had just falling out of the packet and thawed out, and they refused to eat it. it's not as nice as fresh veg so I don't blame them :)
