Hi

My guinea has recently shown signs of early mites, she was scratching a little, had a couple of little tiny scabs. I treated her with spot on Ivermectin and the scabs have gone, she's no longer scratching.

However she has a patch of dandruffy skin on her bottom, the hair is thinner there too. If I touch it she bites my top. My others seem fine, except one of my pair of boars, he has the same symptoms. When I first noticed he went mad when I touched it, desperately trying to bite his bum, but since he had the ivermectin (I thought it best to treat all my piggies) he's massively improved. But the dandruff remains and he seems irritated if I touch it too.

The skin isn't red, it's not inflamed or broken. They're both merino and well groomed, I keep their hair reasonably short for Summer, but I appreciate that it has been quite warm and humid lately, wondering if this may have had an effect. In themselves they are fine, not showing any signs of discomfort and they are by nature fuss pots. They're bright, eating and drinking well, I can only spot this on the bottom of their back and on their bottom (the two areas joining, not two separate patches)

Any advice would be fab, thanks.

At the vets today with my new piggy and she did say that guinea pigs are prone to skin problems and that providing them with LOTS of vitamin C helps with this. Are they getting enough? I add a solution to my piggies water which boosts their vit C intake!

Hi, thanks, def getting plenty of vit.c. it's so strange, I've had guineas nearly 25 years but never had this.

my piggy Walter had the exact same thing, and i thought he had mites, but somebody suggested it could just be scurvy so i gave them a ton of extra veg and hay and stuff and it went away in a week. maybe they just need extra veg. hope you figure it out, and everything clears up. g'luckkk :)
