Hi,

I have noticed this morning that pumpkin my agouti rex has a funny eye, it looks half closed and it looks like the bottom eyelid is droping down?

Was fine yesterday, we ae habad snow so it will be at least a couple of days before I can get to our vets, is there anything I can do and does anyone know what it is?

Thanks

Hi love so sorry to hear about Pumpkin :{:...

In the meantime can you monitor and bathe with boiled water (cooled down first tho) as just a prevention...... being careful to use disposable wipes (makeup remover pads are brillliant for this, nothing comes off them) and wipe AWAY from the eye

One of our boys ended up with fatty eye, which ended up being the lower lid dropped down, he never had problems BUT i was careful with his hay and to make sure he was NEVER EVER in the direct sunlight in case it burnt the exposed area 8...

Best of luck and i would hope that when you're out of the blizzard ( all the best and stay safe xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ) that you can get is properly diagnosed xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Whee all are sending loving wheeeeeks and loves to Pumpkin xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It sounds like an injury problem, could be a hay poke or something may still be stuck in the eye.

I would advise flushing the eye as Glynis suggested, I find the cotton pads helpful as well, soak one in cooled boiled water and simply squeeze the water onto the eye fron the top corner, it will flush the eye and clear some debris (if there is any). If you are able to look underneath the eyelids, very gently of course, it is worth doing so as it's possible something remains stuck in the tissues around the eye.

After doing the above, if you've got any chloramphenicol eye drops to hand - Optrex Infected Eyes or Brolene chloramphenicol 1% - I would personally use these to prevent infection. One drop 3x a day.

I have had pigs who have recovered fully and quickly on the above treatment, also had some do well with the POM Fucithalmic eye drops, and stronger eye drops have been prescribed in much more severe cases.

This morning her eye looks cloudy:(

Is it okay to use optrex infected eye on her then? as this seems to be the only option at the moment?

I have bathed her eye in cooled boiled water and a cotton pad, what now:(

Cloudy is another sign of injury, the blueish cloudy film allows the eye to rest and heal. Optrex Infected Eyes is still fine to use.

Thanks for the advice, I bought some oprex infected eyes this morning and have put one drop in thi morning and one this evening and already her eye looks much better thanks:))

Brilliant news. Keep it up for at least five days, and/or three days after the eye looks better.
