Hi all

We took our two new guineas to the vet yesterday for a general check over and were informed they both have a mild case of fur mites and they treated them with a few drops to the back of their necks.

Since then our two boys have been fighting and growling at each other - could it be because of the mites?

Also, where they applied the drops their fur is all matted and looks damp still (it is dry to the touch though). We've tried brushing them but it hasn't really changed it - the vet gave no advice so I'm just wondering if we need to give them a bath or anything?

Sorry if this seems like a silly question – we are new to caring for cavvies so I don't want to get anything wrong!

You shouldn't bath them during mite treatment as it can wash the solution off. And more importantly it can aggravate the mites and so cause them to go crazy and possibly have fits due to the itchiness.

Let the treatment kick in then see the vet again as mite treatment (ivermectin) needs 3 rounds 2 weeks apart x

It is usual practice to put and leave the drops on the back of the neck and then to have a repeat application 2 weeks later. Please don't wash it off or try to brush it out.
