fur worn away?

so i noticed about half an hour ago that the fur on the inside of baxter's front left food is worn away. at least that's what it looks like; it's like a darker pink patch and the skin is quite smooth. it doesn't seem to hurt him and he's walking fine.
apart from that he's always been really healthy. he's had his annual checkup which was fine, he's eating, snoozing (a lot) bumbling about like normal.
he's only a year old; has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
 
Many pigs seem to have those little patches inside their front legs/feet - I think all of mine have it - just the same as the fur missing behind the ears.
Is it on Baxter's other front foot? An irritation is still possible, but the bald patch in itself can be normal.
 
i usually refer to it as either fur or hair. i didn't think it was that much of a big deal.
that was pretty petty/unnecessary imo, but thanks for the post anyway.

given that I am a biologist.
Fur has at least 2 layer of hair and hair only one and as g.p's only have one layer...

Given that you are a biologist then you will know that fur is the hair of any non-human mammal. That would apply to a guinea pig.

Really Helen any need? if you cant answer constructively then maybe you should refrain from doing so!

I hope this hair loss is a naturally bald area but well done for being so observant :)

Whilst the great fur/hair debate is fascinating (i too call it hair) back to gracies question :(|)

I've not experienced bald patches on feet, only on the inside of their front legs (ankle area i say) i'd keep an eye on it & see if it spreads or if he nibbles at it, sorry i can't be of more help :)
 
Just had a few mins think (and no it never hurt lol) But have your pig/pigs ever had something called Ivermectin?
Its just like spot on tretment for cats and dogs to combat parasites etc? or can you give him/them a medicated bath just incase? :)
 
Can we please stop discussing wether piggies have hair or fur on this thread please, this was not the question the OP asked & it's not helping to find a poss answer :)
 
thank you tab, although my point was i don't honestly see why it matters which it gets called!
i have a feeling it's just a bald spot, he's not picking at it and it is sort of around his ankle area. i was just a bit worried as it looks as though it's turning into a small bump and his toes look slightly pushed to the side? idk, bear with me and i'll have the pics up tomorrow. for the time being he's in no pain and he's scuttling about fine so i'm more curious than really worried <3
 
Anyway Blazey doesn't have a bald patch there perse, it just seems to be a wee bit thinner. It is just above the feet on the inside of the legs you are talking about?

i appreciated your post and i was just trying to say that it proved my point that people call it either/both.
i apologise for that i noticed just then how it looked, wasn't meant to be like that at all <3
 
Please keep the thread on-topic before members end up with un-necessary infractions. I studied biology for 9 years and wouldn't think of correcting something so petty, it's nitpicking.

Piggies don't tend to have hair/fur inside of their ankles ... if you know what I mean.

If you think it is Bumblefoot, then that is something completely different and potentially a problem.
 
I must check my lot, not something I have really noticed. So is this normal to not have fur there then? I'm well confused, it don't take much though!

(I do call it fur by the way, whats on my head is hair but on my animals is fur) I dunno if it is right, but I do have a very strange mind and I am honestly rubbish at science 24 out of 160 I got in school! mallethead
 
After posting my last post, I am going out to check mine too just in case I am wrong! :))
 
I remember worrying about a similar thing with the ears and the lack of fur! If they all have it then surely it is normal. :)
 
my piggies fur is thin in this area too!
on the inside of his front legs but he is a bit of a barber so he could have done it to himself.

In younger piggies like Fitz (right of pic) it's bald but as they get older they get a sparse covering of hair or mine have :)

I've just tried getting a pic of Freaky Treacy's feet, but don't want to disturb her eating (she needs all the food she can get) and she kept sticking her feet (or hands as I call them, and yes, I failed A level biology...) into the readigrass so couldn't get a clear pic.

She's got bald areas on the inner of her "wrists", but also has had two dental issues over the last few years, and quite severe bumblefoot at one time. As a result she was known for a while as Freakle Treacle Two Toes Pig as the bumblefoot really disturbed the structure of her front feet and she appeared to be growing extra toes at one point! Long term her outer toes are slightly above where they'd normally be, and point more forwards than before. This is both sides, and she had bumblefoot in both feet.

The hair thing didn't make me think of this, more the "pushed to the side" part of your post. If it does turn out to be bumblefoot, then although it needs treating I can't say Treacs has had any long term problems from slightly odd toes. She's still first to any extra yummy food, and often bounds up the ramp (that some of them won't manage even when there's food up there) to see if I've put any fresh in.


And yes, I know I've mixed metaphors and terms with hands feet and toes.. At least I didn't mention how hairy my furballs can be :p
