I don't know where else to post this, because my student union are crap, my university are taking their sweet time in answering my questions and i'm getting incredibly frustrated.

I used to work for a newly established steakhouse restaurant set up in March 2010 - until my manager called me on Christmas Eve of all days, to inform me that their administrator had called him that day to force closing, because they weren't making money and were bankrupt.
I had been off work for almost 4 weeks because of a serious illness, prior to that i probably took one shift off. My boss was aware of my condition and not once during those weeks let me know that, a) the business was up for sale and had been since November, b) that my job might be under threat and c) had another member of staff making posters & flyers for the new year.
I'm so angry grrrr
I was told I'd get a letter from the administrator to fill in and send back so i could claim owed wages and sick pay (never in my time there was holiday or sick pay even mentioned).
He doesn't answer my calls, CAB and Merseyside Employment law aren't sure what to suggest and as this a family business, another member of staff rang the other restaurant and its running as usual - now i don't much understand business, but as a student do i have a legal right to anything?
My student loan cleared my overdraft (which i wouldnt have gone into had i not been off work so long) and paid my rent, now i have nothing.

I cant even afford Tesco value food or bus fare.
My guinea pig is living on nuggets, hay and out of date discount veggies because i cannot buy anything. My poor boyfriend is literally stretching the pennies.
Does anybody have any suggestions before i go mental, please?

aww sorry to hear all that hun,* can vent on here as much as * like,it helps!,

do what i do when i get skint,i sell stuff i dont use/want no more on ebay! xx

have you got any family * can borrow off for the time being untill you get back on your feet?or a crisis load hun?

Yeah but unfortunately my dad earns next to nothing with a double mortgage to pay off, my mum earns less than him & its too complicated for me to ask her.
I'm going to have to ask my university for a crisis loan, but my flatmate had on in first year and had to pay it back asap with interest.
This is my final year in uni on an arts course, couldn't be timed worse i swear =[

I am an avon rep. You have to get over 78 worht of sales per book to earn 20% for yourself. I love doing it. But I dont have many customers. If you want to go into it please lemme know.

Maybe you should try going to citizens advice they are extremely helpful and should be able to give you some great advice.

I think you can also apply for a hardship grant from uni which you shouldn't have to pay back. If you have sick notes from when you were off you may be able to back claim incapacity benefit or something, as you have not had any sick pay from your employers

Hi, I'm not all that up on employment law but if the other restuarant is running and making money and registered to the same company then I can't see you not getting paid. You would be better seeking specialist advice so I would google community legal advice and either give their national line a call and speak to someone or seek a specialist in your local area. Your local CAB may just have generalist advisers which might be why they don't know or aren't sure. I hope you get the answers you need

I couldn't possibly be an avon rep =[ i'm city centre based, on a seriously tight schedule with my course, finding the job i had in the first place was sheer luck - but that you ever so much anyway

citizens advice could only suggest the merseyside employment law agency who my collegue has a meeting with thursday *fingers crossed*

there were no sick notes =/ my boss was a friend of my half brother (who i barely even know), we were fairly good 'friends' so he took my word for it when i was ill, no questions asked despite me offering to take in a hospital letter.
i've never heard of a hardship grant :... my university isnt great for letting us know about that sort of thing but i'll certainly follow it up thank you! 8...

See we're not sure about the other restaurant - its been open six years in the Wirral and i think is owned by my boss's/manager's mother, the restaurant i worked at in Liverpool was owned as far as i knew by my boss and his brother, the head chef. i'm trying to find out if i can get hold of any info from HM Revenue and Customs, but i doubt it. i'll definately be calling up for legal advice =] thank you ever so much

O dear....tricky situation.

However as a student you can get a free over draft with no rush to pay it off. Maybe you could do this in the short term?

No with a student account you can have an overdraft up to £1500-£2000 interest free, but once i graduate in July, the interest goes up to a figure I'm not even sure of. I'm already into my overdraft, albeit compared to my first year, not by much, but its too much already. I cant guarantee getting employed between now and then, and my job prospects as a fine art grad aren't too shiney since teaching and gallery work are not my career choice :...
I get my final student loan installment in april, but thats in april =/ and will probably at this rate clear my overdraft again leaving me with nothing at all for food or rent.
I need a rainbow >_<

(basically i cant short term it, art materials are ridiculously expensive, I'm cheap to feed but my assessors aren't ='] so its dont use it, or abuse it )

I'm pretty much getting to this point at the minute. After rent I'll have maxed out all my money because a housemate moved out so now we have to cover her rent as well until we find someone else 0.o The only things I can suggest are:

1. Go and sit in your student union and not move until they help you. It works ^^ They wouldn't let me change flats in halls but I sat there looking peed off until they agreed to what I wanted.

2. Hardship grants.. but again, the above method might be useful.

3. Sell stuff. You'd be surprised what people will buy, even if you think it's not worth anything.

4. Tutor. This is how I get money as of this weekend. I'm tutoring a year 8 boy in English as it's my degree subject and I need the cash. £10 per hour :) But if you know a subject well then look into tutoring in it.

5. Smile nicely at your family and hope they take pity on you

hey,

You have my sympathies, I volunteer at CAB, currently just as a receptionist but hoping to start training shortly.....

These are supposed to be good

Just before Christmas I sold a load of unwanted presents I'd got over the last couple of years and made over £100
Preloved/Gumtree are free if you don't want to pay fees as well.

Have a look on gumtree :) people might have posted wanted ads or you could advertise on there.

Have you applied to your university for a hardship loan? Which university is it? There are still a few mechanisms in place at universities for this type of crisis.

Sorry it's been so difficult :(

No, i'm waiting on my course leader to get back from a business trip because i reckon if i ask him (i informed him of my medical issue just last week), i reckon he'll be more useful than one of the over worked receptionists at my library rolleyes
I'm at LJMU, and the couple of grants i've applied for in the past, i've not been considered poor enough or 'working class' enough so i'll be bloody jammy to get anything. I get a full busary from them next month so they'll be arsey.

Thank you so much everyone. Fingers and toes are crossed.
