Was reading the basic set up on jackiesguineapiggies web site they were using newspaper then kiln dried pine shavings then hay on top. They mention the question marks over the shavings safety so if i was to be risk adverse & want to avoid them altogether what would the best set up be just paper & hay or something else?

There possibilities are endless.

I use newspaper then fleece blankets and change every other day.

I have used newspaper and Megazorb, newspaper, shavings and hay, carefresh (which is costly!) I have a problem with dust. Hay is the most naturalist of beddings for pigs but I didn't want them breathing in any dust at all so fleece works well for me.

Obviously if the pigs are outdoors then I wouldn't be able to use fleece. They need something to keep them warm. :)

Hay over newspaper is fine :)

What are your piggies living in? Cage, hutch or C & C? There are other beddings you can use depending on the housing :)

theory will be a cavy cage thingybob made out of correx & the cube things when i can track some down......

Where do you get your fleece material then i presume you dont literally mean a fleece you'd wear (Si shows male ignorance for fabric shopping skills ;) )

You can buy cubes from www.robertmay.co.uk (you need to order their catologue) www.edenshop.co.uk or www.screwfix.com. I think Screwfix works out as the cheapest, costing me £25-ish for one pack of cubes. You'd probably need two packs if you were getting 3 pigs though.

Whatever you choose to bed your pigs on, they will always need hay. Mine are on medi bed. Check the housing forum and you can see other people's opinions on bedding.

I use fleece blankets from Bargain Madness, but Ikea, Wilkos etc do them too. As Starla said they will always need hay. I suffer with Hayfever so having them housed on something that is kind to my nose works for me.

Screwfix.com do the grids I got 17 in mine which will make a one level 5x2 which is the requirements for 3 with 14 grids You could make is 6x2 and get 4 pigs! ;D

For my piggies i usually use newspaper, shavings and medi bed (treated straw bed for horses but fine for piggies)
but as Archie is super sensitive to everything he has megazorb and plain hay for bedding :)
