Getting a Cat

I had just found out that a friend of my parents had a 5 month old cat that they could no longer take care of, so we’re taking it in. I’m kind of worried about how it’ll be around my piggies, I have them separated in 2 cages (since they really don’t get along). Their cage has openings all around it, it’s like wire? I’ll include a picture. Would the cat be able to get their paw through it?

I've got cats and they've never been able to fit their paws through cages like that. They cat fit paws through c and c cages but hardly ever try.

I'm confused a bit, you said you're pigs don't get along, but you have them together in the photo. It could well be that the cage you are using is way too small for two guinea pigs. Are they both males?
 
A determined cat, especially a little 5 month old will be able to get their paw through those bars, and when they can't, they can still scratch a nosy piggy who gets too close to the bars.. A lesson I learned the hard way when I was still a kid, luckily no piggy was injured but better safe than sorry. These days I make sure my piggies are in a room the cat has no access to :)
 
Can’t really tell how wide are the meshes but I have a cat myself, and she used to stick her paw in when I first got the guinea pigs, out of curiousity I guess. I used to wrap a piece of cloth around the sides of my cage so my cat had limited options to get to them. But still, a 5 month old cat might be more playful and curious than my 3 year old adult cat, so there’s no guarantee.

Their cage is bigger than it shows in the pic, I just zoomed up close to their faces because I wanted to take a picture of just them. It’s one piggy living in that cage now since my other one passed a few days ago.

I have 3 pigs. The black and light brown one has passed. The brown and white one does not get along with my white and black one.

I will make sure that the cat doesn’t get near the cage!

i have a adult cat and 24 cavies !my cat is not bothered by the piggies.she has rounded them up when i had an occasion that piggies escaped the outdoor run.i never let my cat in the piggie room,and she is always supervised.ive commercial cages in the lounge to prevent cat getting in.i think it depends on the cat,but its not worth the risk.guinea pigs are prey animals,therefore the sight of a cat may cause distress.some piggies do have relationships with other speices,but you must take care .

24! Must be a veeery loud house when they’re hungry! I’ll keep the cat outside of the room where the piggies are!

My cats are over 13 so probably very different to a 5month old kitten! But mine aren’t fussed by the piggies (and the other way around) but I still wouldn’t leave them unsupervised around each other!
My cat Daisy showed a bit of interest when I moved the pigs into their new c&c and she could see them running around, sitting watching them more than she ever has. Soon got bored but shows there’s still that bit of a hunter in her!
 
I have a 6 year old cat, and for the first 6 months he always tried to get into the piggy room! He never tried to open their lid or paw through the bars, he just stared into their cage and watched them. I never let him stay in the room long, and now, if I put him in the room, he just walks out! So, I wouldn't be too worried, especially if the piggies are in a secure area.

I’ll make sure to never leave the cat alone with my pigs! Maybe I would introduce them later on but I don’t wanna scare my piggies, so I’ll keep distance between them for now
 
I’m quite lucky with my pair really as they are so good, don’t know if that’s because been here since kittens and when they arrived I had a pair of female rats that they were taught to stay well away from! Rosie is never bothered, just Daisy!
7 male rats, two hamsters, two chinchillas and five piggies later and the only one they showed real interest in was Hamm the rehomed dwarf hamster. He was just so small and zipped around so quickly he resembled her toys I think! But still knew not to go too close to his cage or would be told off! 9 years ago though so she was much younger. Both lazy old ladies these days!

It sounds like a full house! I’m excited for my new pal and hopefully they all get along when/if I decide to introduce them.
