i have recently(about 5 months ago lol) decided i might try and find a peruvian for my other piggies. but before i get one, i want to know a few things. here is some things i can do and what i know...
1. you must groom their long hair daily
2.you must trim their hair when it grows too long.
3.all the other daily cares of any other piggie as well
i know more but can;t be bothered to type :P

i want to know a few things as well.. here are a few questions:
I have been told they can get twice as big as a shorthaired and absynians, is this true?
Can they be housed with abssynians and shorthaired?(i am pretty sure they can)
i know they need a lot of care already, but what other things do they need?
If i decide to get one, should i get it from my local rspca if they have one for adoption?
I live in queensland and i live in a small town and i have only ever seen 2 peruvians in a pet shop, if i can't find one in the shop or rspca, should i look for piggie breeders?
is there anything else i should know about them?

I really do hope to find this information out, it will help me decide whether to get another piggie for my piggie friends..

I know that they can be housed with abssynians and short haried guinea pigs cause a friend of mine has 4 of them.

1) i found my peru to be smaller and more petite than my other pigs, he just looks bigger because of all the hair

2) yes they can be housed with short haired's etc

3) lots of grooming, a hair cut in summer is a good idea too to keep them cool, also trim round the bum to stop the hair getting filthy/smelly O0

4) adoption would be advisable, being a pro rescue forum etc then you can give an unwanted pet a loving home

5) i cant comment on the breeders side cos ive never been to a breeder. my peru was from a pet shop, my mum bought him as a present for me

6) theyre divas! and can be very stroppy. mine has a right temper on him! ;D

lol ok. i would rather get a recue pig than a pet shop pig or breeders pig. i love their cute little faces. one question, for trimming, what type of siccors would you need?

i just use a regular pair of scissors :)

not massive kitchen scissors, just normal sized like office scissors if you get what i mean

There is no "must" when it comes to trimming Peru's hair. It is just a matter of personal preerence. I have kept Perus that I have trimmed and others that I have not and just let the hair grow naturally.

Good luck if you do find a Peru piggie pal - as has been said they are adorable. All the ones I have known have been really laid back and friendly too.

Please be warned that Peruvians and any other longhair could have their hair barbered off by a piggy friend.
I had a neutered barbering boar called Gunn and he lived with a Sheltie and Texel, he used to keep their coats pretty short.

Any breed of Guinea will go together, I have my Skinny(hairless) pigs in with hairy pigs and they have no issues and do not treat the hairless piggy any different.

i didnt spot that, yeah you dont "have" to trim their hair. when its not hot weather i let merlins hair grow O0

I have never had a peruvian but have kept coronets and shelties for years.
I always keep their hair short ... I use hairdressing scissors that I bought from the chemist.
If I have lots of time I do style them more but normally it is a quick trim. Do pay special attention to their rear ends and keep that short so that they do not get smelly and uncomfortable.
They are lovely though and worth the extra care, in my opinion! :smitten:

yeah thanks :) you must trimm around their bums or poo will get caught :) i would trimm mine down in summer and keep it quite long in winter to let them stay extra warm :)
