- is there such thing? my mum was a breeder for years and i have never heard of a giant guinea pig (except for ones that got a bit fat hehe)

my pet shop claims to have them in stock but they looks normal size to me.. maybe they get bigger with age? :S

& if they are real, are they any different in any other aspect of personality/behaviour etc?

Thanks :)

There are "cuy" pigs that have essentially been bred as meat animals. They are usually between 2 and 3 kilos, so way bigger than your regular guinea pig. They tend to live much shorter lives (even the pet ones) and are much, much harder to tame.

I thought they only lived in the wild ? Why must people try and tame all animals. Some should just be left to be wild.

There is also some videos on youtube, its hard to imagine the size untill you see them, but they look to be the same size as some cats!

Ive heard they can be quite nasty and very hard to handle. Are you sure its giant guineas the pet shop is selling/advertising? and not just adult guinea pigs?

Whatever you do DO NOT type in large guinea pig on you tube as there are some very upsetting videos on there! I wish they would ban them.

Sorry to be so blunt but just wanted to warn others, i looked on there as ive never seen a large guinea pig before, wish i hadnt now.

They are known as Cuy and a few years ago I saw a pet shop selling 2 females for £60 each. They looked like regular guinea pigs but were a little bigger.
I'm not sure where this myth comes from about them being vicious though. I know people who have them and they can be skittish (but so can all guinea pigs) but they aren't aggressive or hard to tame at all. :)

the snake feeding vids?
All animals have to eat, we film our piggies eating veggies all the time, its not sooo different. I didn't personally watch them but if the pigs are alive and its a uk video you can actually report them to the police because to feed one vertibrate to another in this country is illegal.

I think I've seen one of these giant guinea pigs in a shop. It was a male and was two or three times the size of a normal adult pig. I wanted to buy it but I was looking for a girl at the time :)

In total disagreement!

I disagree annaliese , watching piggies eat veggies and watching a piggie being fed live to another animal is sooo different when was the last time you saw a carrot squeeking for its life?

I've only ever heard of them on this site, I'd love to see one but whenever I've googled it I can only find pictures of cooked guinea pigs.

Does anyone have any pictures? I'd love to see one.

As i said before if theyre feeding live guinea pigs its illegal and they should be reported to the police... I dont watch the videos personally and i dont make them. The only point i was making is that the videos shouldnt necessarily be banned just because we keep the animals that they use for food as pets.

If you dont like the videos dont watch them... I'd never have got through my animal management course on your ethics though. At askham bryan when i went to college if any rodent died whether it was a guinea pig, degu or mouse or whatever it got put into the freezer and fed to the reptiles. Its the natural order of things, plain and simple

Sorry if i have caused a disagreement here and yes there was a live guinea pig and a snake. I haven't seen it but was told about it, I know that its the circle of life and all but like someone pointed out there is a big difference between veg and live food being fed, but lets not argue about it as we all have difference of opinion's.

So does anyone have a picture of the real giant piggy?

:)

I don't see any problem with animals eating other animals, or with feeding dead rodents to snakes, but I think it's unfair to feed a live domesticated animal to another animal . . . just because the guinea pig has no chance to escape or defend itself. So it's not really natural.

I'd have no problem with it if it was a dead guinea pig that didn't suffer.

They don't look different from regular guinea pigs :) I know Swedish breeders but don't want to link to breeder homepages even if you wouldn't understand anything of what was written. The lady who runs the rescue mine came from have two. http://www.eragons.se/mina%20djur-jag.htm if you scroll down you get to her piggies. Eva and Sylvia are both cuy. I think Eva is 2,5 kilos, she's massive!

Good law about not feeding live animals. It's unfortunately not illegal here... I too think snakes must eat, but feeding live piggies (like some stupid people over here do...) is just too cruel and could even be dangerous for the snake.

Does anyone know where I can go and see a cuy? I am fascinated! Their poos must be enormous though!

Does anyone actually own one?

I've been trying to find out about these and everyone I've spoke to says they aren't friendly and are hard to tame. I've also heard they don't really get on with each other :( They say they are common in Europe but not so easy to find over here.
I'm really interested in having one though. Does anyone know of any rescues with any Cuy looking for a home?
