I had a fantastic cavy vet but he has now left the uk leaving me with a local vet who are apparently recommended. My elder boar looked in pain was losing weight and had trouble eating . I took him to the vet over a week ago and was advised that his molars had overgrown trapping his tongue . He was sent home without painkiller . I returned the next day as he was in obvious pain and got metcam . A week later he is again exactly the same . I am syringe feeding him and took him back yesterday but have been told I have to wait till
Tuesday for an X-ray . I can’t leave him that long in pain which he still is and although wanting to eat is struggling . Any idea recommendations etc . I’m in Southend on sea Essex

Oh dear it does sound like the vet you saw wasnt very clued up. If the molars are overgrown trapping the tongue he needs dental surgery as a priority. Good that you got metacam and are syringe feeding but he needs a good dental operation... @furryfriends (TEAS) is our dental expert, who might be able to advise better!
We have only had 1 dental piggy ourselves with overgrown molars and a misaligned jaw, and the vet didnt wait about or do any xrays, we saw a junior vet who noticed the problem on piggy's first check up the day after we brought her home, and gave metacam- we saw the head vet who does the surgery 3 days later, 3 days after that we had the operation...
Hopefully someone local to you can recommend a good local vet for teeth x

Thank you , he did have the surgery last week and had them filed down but he is still the same and and had three more appoints where they have looked at his teeth and can’t see anything wrong hence the xrays . I’m not happy to wait and leave him in pain so joined here today for help etc as all the vets I used previously have gone .

Sorry I missed out that they did the surgery and then was sent home without painkiller

I hope that someone can recommend a vet for you. Have you looked at our vet locator? He shouldn’t have to wait that long for an X-ray if he is in pain :(

I’m sorry I’m not much help but I do hope you can find a decent vet

Where about’s do you live? If we know the we can help find a pet dental savy vet. There is a fantastic vet in Northampton.

I did have a look thank you but nothing at all in my area . We did have two but both exotic vets left 😭. I might phone again today and insist that they do something . Thank you for replying it’s nice to know someone’s out there when you are at a loss what to do x

I'm in essex

If you are really desperate try to get over to Northampton. I promise you want be disappointed Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic is fantastic and does around 20 conscious dentals a week and probably has the most experience of piggies teeth in the UK. We go from Cornwall he is amazing and very reasonably priced too x

The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic

The only advice I can give you is get to Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic. I promise you, you won't be disappointed and in the long run it'll save you money as he will get them right and as he is able to carry out the work without the need for general anaesthetic, it will be a lot cheaper too. People travel from all over the UK to see him with guinea pigs with dental issues and he is the reason that TEAS exists, as we couldn't do what we do without him!

Thank you . I will call them Monday . I went back to the vet and saw a different one who has shocked and advised that his rear molars have grown back already and are once again trapping his tongue . She thinks the roots maybe causing the pain but can see he is in pain so we now have tramadol also. He is booked in again for Monday to have X-ray and his teeth filed again. She said that if they grow back that quickly is it fair to put him through anaesthetic every three weeks and Ali if it’s the roots she cannot take the teeth out so it would be a case of palliative care for him. Feeling very sad my piggy is nearly 6 . He has lost so much weight it’s so sad to see .

Simon will be able to sort them properly x
thank you . I spoke to the practice , I’m going to take him to my vet Monday and then arranging to take him to Northampton fornall
Other treatments as both vets have advised he would need to be anthestatised for xrays so decided to get the xrays done ASAP and the filing it then we will transfer the record to Northampton x thank you all for your help and fingers crossed he gets through Monday 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I would save yourself the money and go to see Simon instead if it were me. My local vet came out with all that speal too and then wanted to put him down. Ted was back eating 10 minutes after his conscious dental with Simon, something he had not done for months. Poor dentals and continued anaesthetics can really take their toll on little piggies. Good luck whatever you decide x

The nurse said he would for roots which is the suspected pain he has .not sure what to do now
Simon is generally of the opinion that if you get the crowns of the teeth right, then the piggy will eat and the roots are rarely an issue.

Ok thank you I’ll have a ponder tomorrow as Oscar is very poorly and in a lot of pain . I can’t get up to Northampton till Tuesday so I’ll see how he is getting on tomorrow before I decide if I take him local Monday. I will take him anyway to Northampton it’s just if he can wait and picks up with all
The painkillers and hand feeds x thank you for your advise

He is on metacam and she prescribed tramadol too today . She also gave him an injection which my last vet never liked to do as he said it made them too lethargic .

It meloxaid , they said it was metacam just repackaged. Once a day dose is 0.28ml he is so skinny
