Hi,

I'm looking into getting a couple of guinea pigs but don't know whether it's better to house two boys together or two girls together?
I keep hearing different views?!
Also, I'm not really keen on buying from Pets At Home coz I hear so much bad stuff about them but where else can I get them? I don't know any local breeders?

Appreciate any advice! O0

Why don't you try a rescue near you?

Both boys and girl pairs work. But overall i think sows get on better and if you want to get more piggies you can.

Try the rehoming section of the forum.

You're best checking out the local rescues, that way any health issues have been dealt with and they're already bonded. Also, your giving rescue piggies a forever home :smitten: they're so much more tame and trusting most of the time. I'd say for a first time owner you're best going for two girls because they're less likey to fight and you can add more girls later usually with very few problems if you wanted to. Also, there are a tiny amount of health problems boys can get when they're older but that shouldnt put you off. saying that, many boys get on but you'd be lucky to get three or more. 2 boys can get on great though. Its up to you, why not see what your local rescues have and decide then? welcome to the forum by the way O0

I'd thought about that but do rescue centres get a lot of pups? I know it's a bit mean to only want babies :embarassed: but I want them to live a long time.

Thank you both for your advice, its a big help!

Rescues often get pregnant girls in so yes they often have babies, and they do have pairs who are around 1 year old or a few months which is stil very young considering they can live like 7-8 years! plus if you got a pair that were a few months from a rescue they'd already be bonded :)

If you get piggies a few years old they could still live a good more 3-5 years! ;)

I have a pair of boys but most people say that boys are more likely to fall out and girls get along better. I personally don't think it matters - if you go along to a rescue just see what pairs they have and choose whichever you find yourself liking the most - if you go thinking "I want two white rex girls, both under 6 months old" you're not likely to find them. If you go thinking "I want a pair of piggies, under two years old, doesn't matter on colours or sexes aslong as they get along well" you are very likely to find what you're looking for :)

I live in Manchester and I've just seen a thread that there is a rescue in Tameside right near me so I think that will be my starting point!

Awwww them pups are so cute! I so excited, I wish I had my pigs already!

I know I should start another thread but just a quickie, any advice on cages? I've seen one 118cm x 63cm x 66cm, obviously the more space the better but is that enough for 2 pigs?

Thanks :)

erm the recommended size for 2 is 4foot by 2foot, not sure what thet is in cm? The nero 4 from pets at home is good. If you have enough space you could look into making a C&C, these are really good

www.guineapigcages.com

hope that helps x

How will I know if they have been bonded or not? Do they live together separate from others or will the staff tell me that they play nice together?

Sorry I'm full of questions!

Yeah, I think I am thinking too specifically about what I want, I will defo just look for 2 pigs that are right for me :)

they will have the bonded pairs living together, they'll tell you their temperaments etc. Not all pigs get on so they wont have them all together, just bonded pairs :)
Welcome to the forum btw! xx

I think it was the Nero 4 that I have been looking at. It was the biggest I can find but then I have only just started looking really!

So I can rest assured that the rescue centre looks after them well then and will be able to answer any of my questions?

I've got to go now but I will defo be back asking a million more questions before I get my piggies!

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

Yes the rescues will look after them very well, better than pet shops and will be able to answer any questions :)

Thanks, Shadow is really cheeky as well. We had them indoors for a few days and she was always climbing up to say hello.

The pigs i see at Pets at home are not that nice. Long and thin looking more like rats. Try an independent pet shop they usually have nicer locking guineas.

Not all the pigs at p@h are like that Alex. We have adopted 4 guineas from there and they are all lovely. Picked my latest one up yesterday, he is so cute.

3 of mine are from P@H and i think they are gorgeous :smitten: i wouldnt buy from an independent pet shop, none hat i've seen anyway, they keep the animals in worse conditions only in my experience!

Must be the pets at home near me then.

They look mass bred and very thin and rat like. I have two local pet shops which i visit regularly, they look after their animals very well and have nice pigs in regularly. Was there recently when the manager refused to sell to a customer because she was not convinced that the pig was going to be properly looked atfer which i thought was very good.

I think even if they do start off looking a bit thin, thats nothing to do with mass breeding and as long as they're fed properly once they're in their forever home they end up just as fat as any pig! :)

Have a look on zooplus website. They can be cheaper and you get money off for your first order. Iv used them a few times and never had any problems. Look under indoor rabbit cages. x

Not having brought from pets at home i will bow to the people that have. I'm sure they have got some lovely pigs from their local branches.

I'm sure it depends on who supplies them and how they are managed

I agree, it does depend on branches etc, ive heard some horrible stories of pigs baught from some branches but my experience with them has been good. xx
