I have a 5 year old male GP who's had no end of troubles with his molars and front teeth; we have an excellent GP vet who has done multiple dental surgeries for him over the years. About 6 months ago, one of his lower front teeth broke at the jaw and didn't re-grow. I've kept a close eye on him, and as his weight is starting to dip I'm guessing it's time for another dental...

I'm wondering whether GPs can live comfortably with a front tooth missing? I'm worried about his quality of life if he's going to need major dental surgery every few months (last time, he had four anaesthetics in four weeks before we could get things under control). Does anybody have experience in caring for a three-toothed piggy, or one with chronic dental problems? As are all our piggies, this one is much loved and any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

I haven't been in that situation before, so I don't know much, but I just wanted to say I hope he gets better soon and the problem is fixed somehow :)

Guinea pigs can manage perfectly well with incisors missing. I have a number of lethal gene piggies who are missing their bottom incisors completely and they can eat just fine. They obviously can't eat things that they need to bite down on, like a carrot, but can manage most veg. I tend to cut it into strips for them. Your piggy should be fine as only one incisor is missing and generally the teeth still tend to wear ok. Just keep an eye on the corresponding top incisor as it may need burring down from time to time if it isn't getting worn properly.

Sammy has lost his lower incisor permanently - he still eats provided he gets "thin slices" of hard veggies.(e.g. carrots/corn)... and can, in any case, manage his hay, leafy greens and dried food well without any help

He also now gets quarterly toofy checks from Uncle Simon.

That's super news, many thanks - such a relief to know that it's manageable. He seems to manage most veg OK, but I will start cutting it into strips as I think this may help his back teeth to wear more evenly. Thanks again for the advice - greatly appreciated :)
