So I went to the vets this morning and practically had to beg him to give different anti b's, beg him to trim his teeth and to administer a gut motility injection.

Safe to say the vet was USELESS!

I totally forgot to ask for pain relief for the little guy.
Will a different vet who I haven't been to prescribe pain relief?
Or can I buy metacam over the counter in a chemist?

Unfortunately metacam is prescription only from the vets.

I suggest you phone the receptionist and explain that you forgot to ask for pain meds. They should then hopefully speak to a vet who will prescribe it for you.

I'm sorry that your vet was useless

She told me the vet is in surgery now and can't be spoken to (which I understand) but she then
went on to tell me that I'd have to wait 24hrs and to phone back in the morning?

I am livid.
Is Calpol Six Plus safe to use?

What is wrong with your piggy?

I wouldn't give calpol to piggies. Can you go to a better vet?

Adding your location to your profile will help a lot.

He's had his teeth snipped this morning as the first vet completely missed the fact his fronts were overgrown, generally been off his food for 2/3 days.
I've been syringing him every 1-3 hours both Critical Care and water. He's also had Baytril which I now suspect has made his tummy even worse!
I'm just so scared now that he is so weak the vets will say put him to sleep instead of giving him some pain killers.
He is showing willing to eat but just won't (probably because his teeth are sore)
He is now on Septrin so I just wanted some pain relief to ease him up a little bit.

Hi!

If his front teeth are overgrown, then there is a serious problem with the back teeth because front teeth are normally self-sharpening and do NOT need clipping. If you do that without a dental check at the back, you only manage to unbalance the dental system further and not correct it as your boy will struggle to pick up things, which is what the front teeth are used for. The back teeth are used for chewing and are ground down by the silica and hay and grass. This is the reason why a guinea pig diet should be mostly hay based.

The most practised and competent vet who sees guinea pigs from all over the country on a daily basis is Simon Maddock in Northampton. If you have ongoing and repeating dental issues, then you might want to have your guinea pig checked out by him, as you will be in the most competent hands. It is really worth the trip as a fair number of forum members can attest.

Please monitor the weight daily at the same time and top up with syringe feed whenever necessary. As hay is making around 80% of the daily food intake, you cannot control the food intake. hay is often the first food group that is dropped when a guinea pig is in pain.

Unfortunately metacam and any metacam based brands of painkillers are prescription-only. See another vet if necessary, but make sure that you supplement your boy with syringe, first and foremost. Your home care is as important as any vet care!

Two vets are now saying they cannot see anything wrong with the back which I don't believe.
However, what I do believe is that he isn't strong enough for GA. He is very weak and lethargic at the moment.
I have been syringe feeding him since Thursday night.

Could I blend hay with water in a nutribullet as stupid as that sounds or does it have to be dry?
He hates taking the CC mix and tries spitting most out but I'm so scared of ramming it down his throat.
Even if I can get him well enough on pain relief to boost him up before going under GA for a full dental.

I feel awful because I feel like I am making him suffer.
I'm going to go back to the original vets and see what he says. I will tell him that the fronts were drastically over grown.
Now i'm so worried I shouldn't of let him clip them :(

He is being syringe fed 0.5ml every 15 mins or so just to get little bits into him.
Is there any injections the vets can give him to up his fluids or anything?

2 hours ago he had 0.5ml of Septrin and a Vomend injction.

His breathing rate is 110 per minute but seems like an effort.
I don't want to make the poor guy suffer but I want to give him the best chance I can!

You can use mushed up pellets or a mix of CC and pellets, but you need to adapt syringe tip as shown in our guide. PLEASE take the time to read our very detailed and practical illustrated syringe feeding guide. It also contained tips on how to keep a guinea pig hydrated. You can mix dioralyte into the water you are syringing.

Syringe as much in one go as he will take in one go, but never more than 0.3-0.5 ml at once (i.e. one mouthful). Then wait until it has gone down. Depending on how much you get in in each session, you repeat it every 2-3 hours. you find the guidelines for amounts and frequencies in our syringe feeding guide.

Simon Maddock doesn't use GA unless necessary depending on what is going on. He is also not using vetergesic for GA, which can often cause adverse reactions. I have added the link to his clinic in my previous post.

Here is a link to other recommended vets. Please be aware that guinea pig dentals are an area where VERY few vets are savvy on.

He doesn't particularly want either the pellets or the CC or both mixed. I'm scared I will send it into his lungs.
Can the vet give him an injection to help with fluid levels or to rehydrate him?

I think he needs something today to get him through today and tonight otherwise I doubt he is going to make it.
Is there anything they can have to boost energy to fight?

I really do not understand why your vet is saying you need to wait 24 hours to get the metacam :( I know for a fact that if I needed pain meds, they would be ready and waiting for me within the hour.

I once had a dental piggy and although not particularly cavy savvy, my vet new straight away that there could be a problem with his back teeth but she needed to knock him out to double check and do the dental. Having said that, he wasn't completely knocked out and was just given a wiff of gas. Could that be an option for you?
