Hello, I am a pretty new guinea pig owner so I've only recently had the pleasure of putting them on the grass (in a safe pen obviously) and watching them enjoy the edible floor. However, I'm unsure how much vegetables they need along with the rich spring grass. At the moment I have been giving them a bit less than their normal amount but the other day they were looking up at me for more after they had finished which they don't normally do. As hard as it was to walk away from them, I didn't give them anymore because I don't want them to get fat. Is this the right thing to do? Am I feeding the right amount of veggies? Also is it different in summer if the grass is dryer?
Sorry if this is a bit long
Thanks :)

It's great you are thinking abut this.
When mine have had a session outside on the grass which is very lush right now, I tend not to give them fresh veg. or if I do I only offer very limited veggies (one strip of pepper, 1 slice of cucber and a green bean for example).
I count the grass as part of their vegetable ration.
However later in the Summer when the grass is drier I look at it as hay, and still give them their full portion of fresh veggies.

But I don't know if that is right or not - it's just how I do things.

If they are eating grass then they shouldn’t need as much vegetables

Thank you. I'll cut down on their veg a bit more then. It's nice to know I've been doing things pretty much right :)

Hi!

Fresh rich fast growing grass counts towards the veg intake; grass that is not growing or shrivelling up in high summer counts more towards hay in your daily menu plan.
