In my Guinea Pig's shed mainly! LOL
Hi,
Just a quick question - I've noticed one of the girls is having slightly greenish poops. They are a little soft, but not diarrhea at all. Does anyone know what could be the cause?

A few days ago I was feeding them a bit to much veg, and they got slight diarrhea, but now I have cut down and all the rest of the poos seem to be back to normal.
They have Excel hay 24/7, are fed Excel nuggets 24/7, have fresh water 24/7, have fresh veg daily, however, have been having advent calendar treats for the past month.. could this be a part of the reason?
Also, I read somewhere online that some salads can make them have green poops, and lately I have been feeding them kale? Could this have contributed?

Just a bit concerned, that's all. I have tried searching the GPF for it, but nothing came up. Thought this topic may be of use to other people if they come across it.

Thanks. :)

I have also now read that too much cucumber and celery can cause "soft stools", which I feed them almost daily. Is this true?
If so though, why does it seem that only one pig is getting it?

Hello and welcome. Yes, too much watery veg can cause sort stools. Certain foods can cause green pools and the advent treats could be to blame.

I would keep a close eye on piggy poops for a few days. If the poops become runny, please see a vet ASAP

Okay, thank you. So would you lay off feeding celery, cucumber and kale for a while? How about beetroot, is that okay?

One of my piggies seems to get these from cucumber, whereas the other two are fine. I would withhold the cucumber for a few days & maybe only give it occasionally as a treat. :)

I think the colour is just due to what they have eaten. My piggies get cucumber every day for breakfast and are fine. Beetroot is also fine to feed your piggies. If the poops look healthy and are just green it is only from the colour of the vegetables.

cecal feces they are the poo's the guinea pig re-ingest, most guinea pig's offered these pellets will snatch them out your hand. Dirty little critters!

More information;

"NORMAL:
Droppings should be uniform and oval, medium to dark brown. Aromatic greenish droppings may be caecal pellets, which the guinea pig re-ingests (necessary for good nutrition).

Tip: Did you know guinea pigs eat special droppings called cecal feces? This is known as coprophagy. Cecal feces contain many important nutrients. Read more about digestion on the impaction page."

"Coprophagy (eating the soft cecal feces) is vital to the good health of all cavies as it provides them with necessary nutrients. Cavies may eat the soft cecal feces 150 to 200 times in a day, usually directly from the anus. If an animal is obese or pregnant, these soft droppings may be expelled and eaten from the floor. Very young cavies may also eat their mother's soft droppings. Some cavies have been known to snatch cecal feces from other pigs. These feces are supposedly the best ones to feed a sick guinea pig on antibiotics in order to reinoculate good bacteria into the digestive system. The drier fecal pellets are also used but do not contain as many beneficial bacteria."

As said above they may be cecal pellets. It might be that you give your piggies quite a bit of veg that is high in vitamins, minerals, water content and the whole point of cecal pellets is that they need to be re-digested to help absorb all of the nutrients. So you piggies might just be having a lot of cecal poos that need to be eaten again :))

Love the aromatic bit lol!

My piggy definitely gets softer poops from cucumber. I know there are 2 types of poops but these are definitely not cecal poops, hers are down to the cucumber, since not giving her any she has been fine. The other 2 don't seem to be affected by it at all, no idea why!

Hi,

I was told to avoid celery - too many salts I think? - so may be worth checking out
