One of my pigs has very long curly and thick hair. I have a small pet fluffy soft brush but it doesn't seem to do anything. I also have a comb shaped brush but that seems to rough on her thick fur and Dolly absolutely hates it! Also have a mini brush. I can't seem to find an appropriate brush. I have had to trim some of the fur around her bottom area and given her food etc while I am doing it. Just wondered if anyone could recommend a brush or technique and do people cut short all the fur around the bottom/ sides? Thank you

I have not owned long-haired piggies, but I do know that a soft brush does virtually nothing for their fur. I have a metal brush that I unknowingly purchased, only to find out that it was for long-haired pigs! I think it would be perfect for thick hair. It is shaped a bit like a comb, but has two sides, where the gaps between the metal bristles are larger on one than the other. I'm not sure of the brand.

From my experience, most piggies don't like brushing at first. If you think about it, how would you react if someone was trying to pet you with some strange object that made you feel weird? I'd probably hate it too. Maybe you could try letting her sniff it, and then feed her as you slowly, gently get her used to its presence. Once you start brushing her, you'll have to be persistent, doing it nearly every day or however often you plan to brush her without fail, and hopefully she will eventually calm herself to the point that she actually almost enjoys it when you take her out for brushing.

If she seems to already be fine with brushing, just not with that specific brush type, please disregard the above. :)

Thank you that's really useful, I will look for that brush as sounds ideal.

I have always had very long thick hair myself and hate it being touched or brushed and as a child would go into histerics so I understand Dollys reaction!

I think it's the persistence I've been lacking as I don't want her to associate me with horribleness, as I've not had them long and want to build a bond but I think a little and often is probably best.

I've noticed a small mat on her fur this evening :(

It's so hard to do things that our piggies don't like. It makes me sad to hear my piggies wheeking angrily when I'm trying to cut their nails and such, even when I am positive I am not hurting them. Unfortunately, it's for the best.

I don't think anyone enjoys their hair being brushed as children. :) Your reaction was understandable.

If she has thick hair, then an afro-look style rough comb is going to be the most effective. :)

I would recommend to keep the long coat around the back end and sides cut short, especially the under-coat, so there is less risk of painful matting.

Cool thank you! I think I will have a proper hair dressing session this weekend! her hair seems to be growing longer and thicker and curlier by the day! Absolutely gorgeous but it will take work to manage :)
