can you put guinea pigs and rabbits toegther thanks guinea is 9weeks and rabbit 16weeks thanks

you can put them together but can have risks as with any animals. some people say its fine and they get on gr8 others say they wouldnt recommend it. if in doubt ask your vet for advice.

It is not recommended to put them together. They have different diets Guineas need vitamin C rabbits need vitamin D. Also a Rabbit can kill a Guinea pig by kicking, sitting or simply just walking.

I wouldn't do it. :)

It's not really advisable....bunnies can unintentionally hurt piggies also they have different dietry needs :)

Nope. A rabbit won't mean to hurt a guinea but the weight of them and the force that they can kick out can do so much damage. It doesn't matter about what sex they are because their diet requirements are so different anyway. :)

I would say no. Guinea pigs and rabbits are completely different species, they eat different food and communicate in different ways. It is not advisable.

Guinea pigs need a diet that has added vitamin c in it, now you would either have to feed your rabbit guinea pig pellets, or your guinea pig rabbit pellets, which I would not be good for them, or you would have to feed them separately, which is just a lot of hassle.

Also they communicate differently. Guinea pigs use a range of noises to communicate with each other, whereas rabbits largely communicate using body language, much of which is characterised by the movement of their long ears, which guinea pigs don't have. So they may get frustrated as they would not be able to communicate with each other.

And lastly, rabbits even the dwarf ones (well my dwarf one anyway) are bigger and stronger than guinea pigs, if a rabbit gets scared or angry it is likely to lash out, and one kick from a rabbit could serious injure and/or even kill your guinea pig.

So if you want to get your guinea pig some company, then please get another guinea pig of the same sex and not a rabbit. Even if you've seen rabbits and guinea pigs living together happily, it is not recommended that you put them together. You rabbit and guinea pig may be able to play together during floor time, but I would advise you not to make them share the same living quarters.

Agree Kiran my rabbit Tika is a Nethie and she can kick so damn hard! Little minx! ;D

My rabbit Bugsy was a netherland dwarf too, he was such a little , he kicked the vet, and jumped off the examining table during his vaccinations, every vet at the clinic dreaded seeing him lol.

I keep both rabbits and guinea pigs, but they have their own hutches to sleep in and a very large area to share with guinea pig sized hide aways, plus a very large garden! It also helps that both rabbits are neutered (I have a buck & a doe) Have 2sows and the boar guinea pig has also been neutered too! O0 Don't keep the rabbit and the guinea pig in the same hutches, make sure that the guinea pig's hutch entrance is big enough just for the guinea pig!So that it has a place to escape! O0 And have the rabbit neutered wether it is a buck or doe! This is my way to keep my animals but many people will not like it,but everyone to their own!

Don't put them together :) Just get a friend for your guinea and give your rabbit lots of attention. They really do need to be kept seperate

It is best not to. You can, but there are so many bad scenarios. The hardest problem is the food differences. It is difficult to insure that your guinea pig doesn't eat rabbit food. Next, male rabbits have a tendency to hump other guinea pigs. This obviously can be very bad. Most rabbits are so large that they can easily injure a guinea pig. Observed floor time can be ok, but housing together isn't good.

Not only do male rabbits hump guineas causing possible back injuries, female rabbits get very territorial and can easily injure a guinea when warning it to 'stay away'

This is a big NO NO NO NO!! I would definalty not risk it, they need company of their own kind :)

Oh and the RSPCA say that animals should be kept with their own kind if they are social animals and shouldnt be kept with other animals! :)

Not just the RSPCA... it's what the law says! They have a right "...to be housed with, or apart from, other animals".

That's correct. The law is VERY UNSPECIFIC for obvious reasons.

If housing the guinea pig with a rabbit/snake/dog/bird of prey is contributing to the cruelty the guinea pig is enduring it will be used as additional evidence in a court case.

PLEASE stop telling people that they will be PROSECUTED if they fail to separate different species. It is not recommended to keep rabbits and guineas together.

I keep to girl g/pswith a dwalf rabbit, they have been together for over a year with not one problem.

they have a large hutch on different levels and access to a run on all nice days.

I always keep them clean so if anyone fancies prosecution bring it on
(activist have tried before to us with the fact that we sell our surplus baby birds at bird shows and we won the case in London)

As said above it is if you keep species that are totally incomatable ie mouse and snake!

No, you're wrong. The RSPCA have chosen to interpret the above law as rabbits and cavies not being housed together so if you were visited you'd be told in no uncertain terms to seperate them.

If someone reported you. I was reported when I had a very scared dog that was abused by children and left to rot on a motorway. He was highly active ate like a horse but was skinny someone said I wasn't feeding him so they came out and checked saw that I kept him more like a baby than a dog...lol and were happy. Guess someone had Monty's best interests at heart so I can't feel too bad about it. :)

correct me if i'm wrong but i think the rspca can remove them under the new duty of care act. ?

I didn't say they said it was illegal i was just saying that since it is actually quite dangerous to keep piggies and rabbits together they could be taken away under the duty of care act ie putting an animal at unnecessary risk?

Oh for god sake you lot will you just simmer down,

NO it is not ideal and no there is no law to say you can't do this, there is just guide lines and if the RSPCA where to be called they would advise people of these guide lines

Please don't turn this into a slagging match just because someone wants to care for their pet in a certain way, there are people on here who i don't feel look after their pets in an idea way, but you don't see me saying well this and that etc:

I think the law isn't clear. You know I'm confuzzled easily. ::) If someone can point me in the direction of where I can read it please. Not to have a go at anyone but to educate my tiny mind! ;D ta! x
