Oopsie... accidentally posted this is the wrong section and it went for moderation :x Posted this in the guinea reference section instead of here lol DOH mallethead

I was curious as to whether or not Guineas can have toast and popcorn (obviously both plain).

I used to give my hamster a small crust of toast each morning and it was lovely as it trained him to wake up at the same time and sit by the bars waiting for his toast hahaha! I also make popcorn sometimes (the plain stuff you get from health food shops) and was wondering if guineas can have it? Thought it might make a fun toy for them too if I put pieces in a ball or strung them up somehow.... not sure how I'd do that mind without using string that could be dangerous to the guineas, but you get the idea :)

xx>>> can't wait to bring guineas home! It's too far away!! xx>>>

Anyway best go sleep! Am a sleepy piggie! zzz

You'd be better off giving them a piece of carrot or apple, just a small piece, as a treat, cos they'll like it more. :)

I have read on a website that you can give them crusty/stale bread if you're stuck/run out of food, but I don't think it's a great idea, cos it could give them digestive problems maybe?

And I'm not sure about popcorn . . .

I know you're not really meant to give them cooked food, but I don't know, is guinea pig food cooked anyway ?/

I don't think the odd piece of toast crust or popcorn would hurt them... but probably wouldn't make it a daily treat. Like Ciara says there are so many other things they go nuts over that are better for them.

No worries :) I'll av to av some fridged veggies at hand for breakfast times so they can get some noms!

Get a pot of fresh herbs for your windowsill or sprinkle a little dried herbs on their pellets!

Coriander, parsley, basil, dill, mint are all herbs they can eat and do like!

I read this earlier today on the guinea pig connection website. It says dill is poisonous to piggies. It gets very confusing when you read one thing then read something else which contradicts the other. It's worrying also that if we get it wrong we can harm our piggies.

the following foods are poisonous to guinea pigs:

potato sprouts, potato peelings, and anything to do with a potato plant
beans and anything to do with a bean plant
anything to do with a tomato plant (the tomato itself is okay)
anything to do with rhubarb
dill (watch out for prepackaged "salad & herb" kits)
flowers or any part of a flowering plant
houseplants
unidentified weeds
any foods that were previously frozen
fruit cores, pits, and seeds

I thought bean sprouts were ok.

And some flowers are ok too.
