Hello everyone. I am now convinced that my guinea pig has an abscess. He had a small lump on the side of his neck yesterday and it eventually resulted in a wound which had a terrible odour.

We applied turmeric on the bloody wound (Known for it's healing affects) and today the odour has reduced quite significantly. I bought some dettol, which I am planning to mix with warm water to apply on the wounded area, which at the moment has dried up. However the dettol had a label on it saying not to use on cats - So for this reason should I completely keep this away from my guinea pig?

I simply cannot afford vet care, and all the information I can have about treating an abscess from home for a guinea pig will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

I'm sorry, but the rule on here is that we must always recommend vet treatment and an abcess needs treating with antibiotics. Are you in the UK? can you access the PDSA?

I don't think Dettol is suitable, if I had to clean a wound I would use a saline solution, Hibiscrub or Povidone Iodine, but I would only use that after it had been checked by a vet.

Hey Helen, I reside in Leeds and there is an RSPCA in Bradford which provides services to animals for a minimal cost. Unfortunately you have to live within that area and provide proof and such.

I tried phoning the RSPCA in Leeds and they didn't even pick up. I haven't heard of the PSDA but if you could send me a link for me to contact them, then I will be very appreciative.
