So my male guinea pig has just turned 5 and the only vegetable he likes/eats is cucumber gets excited for it every morning and empties the dish but for the past few days he won’t go over to it and only eats it if you give him it out of your hand but he’s also in his bed all day and doesn’t leave it and isn’t active but when he’s out the cage he’s fine and he’s also eating his hay fine too and doesn’t eat much nuggets I’m worried he’s about to die but trying not to think like that any help would be good

Hi!

Please see a vet as promptly as you can; ideally within 24 hours but the sooner the better!
It sounds like your boy is not well at all. Loss of appetite and apathy are red alarm symptoms.

Switch from weighing once weekly to weighing daily in order to monitor the food intake (keeping in mind that over 80% of what you piggies eat in a day is hay which you cannot control by eye and which means that your boy can lose a lot more weight that you think very quickly). Kitchen scales from a supermarket are perfectly adequate.

Please step in with syringe feeding as soon as your piggy loses more than 50g/2 oz depending on the seriousness of the loss of appetite.
The guides below will help you care for your boy until you can see a vet and until medication is kicking in. They contain all the step-by-step practical details you need.
Your care can make all the difference in getting your boy through a health crisis, but it can only work if the cause is diagnosed and treated appropriately by a vet.
