Hello my fellow guinea pig owners!
Do any of you also own cats?
I'm getting a Kitten, he's going to be around 1 and a half month old when he arrives at muito house. My pigs are also tiny, I'm not certain of their age but I got them at a pet store around Christmas, so I'm guessing they are aound 3-5 months old?
The question is, according to your experience, do they get along?
Thank you! :)

If I was to get a cat I would keep the guinea pigs in a room with the door shut so that they couldnt interact as a preditor could be very frightening to the piggies.

I have two dogs and they are no longer allowed in the dining room where the guinea pigs live. Just in case.

I had a cat that decided to wander into my home one day (and no, he wasn't my cat) and I found him perched atop the guinea pig run. The cat couldn't reach Jake (who, for some reason, decided to come out and say hello) but would I have intentionally introduced them? Probably not. They couldn't reach each other, and the cat in question was quite friendly, but I still wouldn't have left them alone or where the cat could reach them even under supervision.

That said, from my experience with dogs, keeping them in the same house is not an issue. Get along, probably not. Jake was a bit of a special case in that respect, no common sense whatsoever.

Hi i have 2 indoor cats and 2 indoor piggies, they are allowed in the same room but only under strict supervision. The boys (piggies) cage is completely covered (C&C with lid) and raised of the floor. The girls (cats) are 8 now, the one is far too grown up to bother with chasing and playing but the other is a live wire very kitten like and is always looking for trouble so i keep a special eye on her all the time, lil minx she is lol. I wouldn't risk a frisky kitten with young frisky piggies to be honest, it's too tempting and at the end of the day it's only instinct to a cat to chase, play and kill. x x x

Thank you all for your answers :) I am going to fully close my guinea pigs cage and keep them away from the kitten. I may introduce them later on, but only under my supervision :)

I have two cats. I wouldn't let them be alone together. Both my cats view the pigs as dinner when they are in the inside cage.

It's good to introduce animals when they are young. I'm in the process of introducing my new puppy to my farm animals so she won't chase them when she's older.

Congrats on your kitty! Show us some pictures when you get her!

I have two cats and at times they are very interested in my guinea pigs. I won't risk putting them together so the pigs are in an enclosed cage. When they're in there outdoor run the cats love to watch them. The one has tried to tap them like he does mice, but can't get his paws through the bars so they're safe. The other sits on top of the run.

I have seen videos of people introducing very young kittens (about 5-6 weeks) to rabbits and them bonding very well and being fine with each other. I guess if you introduced them properly and teach them that the piggies are part of the family then it might work.

The safer option is to keep them separate but if the cat (when older) was to get into the room then he would see them as prey and not family.

I have a cat and she is frightened of the piggies.all my cages are enclosed.Katie(cat) has on one occasion rounded up the piggies when they escaped there outside run.cats socialising happens between 3 and 8 weeks,it is a very small time window, but if introduced to humans and other animals they can become firm friends, but it needs very close observation, and your piggies must be in a predator proof run.

O will try to introduce them, they are still all babys and might get along. But as the cat grows I will have to keep a close watch on him with the piggies, you never know...!

I have 5 Guinea pigs and a 8 year old cat, Marcus , he has grown up around Guinea pigs and I think considers them his brothers and sisters. I think he is probably quite exceptional , but I've always been able to trust him around 'his' pigs . I would find life very difficult if he wasn't a very pig friendly feline Just make sure your new kitty knows that it has to respect Guinea pigs and that they aren't toys. Cats learn quickly.

I would personally never risk it, cats are predators and piggies are prey. My piggy Tonks always seems to lure my cat Tilly over to see her to say hello or something bizarre but I would never trust them without a secure cage around one of them.

You hear too many horror stories about dogs and cats who "loved" the small prey animals until 3 seconds of instinct kicks in and you lose a pig.

I'm sorry, I love my cat but she is a predator and it is her nature. It isn't her fault, it just has to be accepted. They can't be trusted at all imo. I really wouldn't risk a piggies life due to putting human emotions like "friendship" onto animals, it could end badly :(

My lovely work kitty Lucky starts to bring in rabbits this time of year that she's caught out in the field, babies especially - so any chance to chase and catch a piggy could be deadly. (I manage to release the majority of bunnies from Lucky quite unscathed)

It's a tricky one, I hear everybody's views and don't disagree but I think if you introduce as a kitten he will be used to them as he grows up. I'd be surprised if a cat went for a piggie but that's just my opinion!

My cat would definitely go for my piggies lol and I know people who've lost piggies and Netherlands rabbits to cats before :( They're not as domesticated as we would like to think.

As others have already, said cats are predators and guinea pigs are prey.
Even the most calm and laid back of cats can find a sudden movement or odd noise reawakens that deeply buried predator instinct.

As there is no real advantage to either the pigs of the act, I would never take the risk of having them together.
Guinea pigs are small and fragile, and even a friendly, playful swipe of a cats paw could seriously injure them.

Honestly , Ido think it all depends on the cat and if they've grown up around Guinea pigs. Most cats can tell the difference between wild prey animals and family pets, and learn to treat them with respect.

My cat, Priya, has grown up around the TEAS piggies. They were here before her, and she is actually very protective of them. I would never leave her access to them without supervision, but I don't think she would harm them at all. I once had a piggy escape from a hutch in the shed while I was out and she lay across the doorway until I got home, to make sure they didn't get out into the garden.
