They are usually advertised as bird / poultry / small animal auctions and the conditions are not always great. In theory it's like buying from a petshop - by buying the animals from there you are in effect supporting the auction / trade but sometimes you just can't leave the poor things there. Many of today's piggies at the auction were young, fit and apparently healthy and mostly being bought by families with children - cheaper than pet shops! But 3 were not ok - the little girl I posted about, and 2 very sickly boys, who both have snuffly runny noses and eyes as well as a possible ear infection. These both needed treatment and are now with me and off to see Vedra to get meds. One of them is very poorly indeed.
It's a tough decision to make, and I'm not great as my heart rules my head, but I'm glad I got the 3 out today. I don't want to start a debate as to the wrongs and rights of it - but I know those 3 piggies are better off with me getting the medical attention they need.
Many of the piggies from this auction have had fungal problems / ringworm so need strict quarantine - as in separate rooms, gloves, alcohol rub for hands in between handling, feeding / cleaning last etc.
