Hi everyone, I wrote on here a few weeks ago about my guinea pig chewing his toes and how they got infected. I went to the vets and got two meds for him, one was antibiotics and one was to stop the swelling. I’ve been bandaging up his feet so he can’t chew them and it was working until he pulled one of them off and bit his other toe. Now I’m worried because his toe has gone black now and bleeding a bit. I’m worried as I don’t know what to do and I can’t take him to the vets until Tuesday. Here’s some pictures, does anyone know what this is or what it could be? Any advice? X

I tickled the black toe with a pen lid and he kicked his leg upwards, so i was wondering do you have any advice whether it’s an infection or dead? X
only a vet can answer that really... Can you get in any sooner? Infections can spread pretty fast, looks very sore..

Dark flesh on an injured area is often not a good sign... please get him seen as soon as possible.

Looks like a nasty nail bed infection, with or without some skin necrosis (tissue death). If he kicks his foot when you touch it he will still have sensation. He needs very strong pain relief to stop him from biting at his toes and some professional wound management from one of the vets/nurses to get this under control to be honest.

Hope he is doing okay?

Hello, sorry I forgot to put an update on here. Cookie went to the doctors and got antibiotics and more metacam. the black toe is now gone. They say he’s doubled in weight and is very happy. Also, the vet included that he is healthy despite his legs still dragging; this is caused by a rare genetic condition. Cookie might be able to walk in the future but for now I’m just going to build him a little sort of wheelchair to give him support.
